My cat died after spay surgery. Was it due to anemia complications?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

I talked to someone recently about our cat. Well we had to put her down due to being anemic. The question I have is should the vet perform surgery "spayed" of her RBC 5.88 HCT 23.9% HGB 8.7 NEU 1.02 EOS 0.09 them are all low counts. She had one high count MCHC 36.4. After the surgery she wasn't right. We ended up taking her back to vet and her RBC 1.04 HCT 4.2 HGB 1.4 RETIC 2.6 EOS 0.11 PLT 145 and K 2.9. She was only 11 months and was healthy up until the surgery. Was this the cause of death.

Prior to surgery she was mildly anemic which may have been secondary to a parasite, fleas, infection, blood loss, or possibly it was just normal for her. Since her HCT dropped to 4.2 after surgery, I am concerned that she was bleeding internally. The only way to know the exact cause would be to have a necropsy done to look for abnormalitites. I am so sorry that your cat had to be put down. That is very sad.
