My cat died after mastectomy surgery. What went wrong with her?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

My cat was happy and healthy about a month ago and then we discovered two lumps on her midsection. We brought her in and the vet said she needed them removed. He called during her surgery and said she needed a full mastectomy. After the surgery, she seemed like she was recovering then started not being able to breathe, eat, drink, pee or poop. We brought her to the vet many times for fluids and enemas but she never recovered and died in an ER. I want to know what went wrong.

Hello. I am so, so sorry for the loss of your kitty. There is really no way to know if this was a surgical/medical error, if there was any underlying health concerns, or just really bad luck that she had so many problems after her surgery. Without a necropsy, there is no way to see or understand why this happened. You can contact your state board of veterinary medical examiners & lodge a complaint. They will ask for the surgical records & if something is amiss, they will investigate. That is about all you can do. Again, my condolences on your loss & thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
