My cat has diarrhea 5 days, scratching bum. Vet or home remedy?

It is concerning that Lola has diarrhea, and it could be that it is intestinal worms causing the continuing problems. She could have tapeworms, and those require praziquantel to kill. If the deworming medication she got didn't have it, that could explain the issues with her stool. I'd have her checked out by a vet in the morning. I hope this helps.

Diarrhea is a very non-specific signs so I'm afraid the possibilities are numerous. Intestinal worms, inflammatory bowel disease, food sensitivity, allergic reaction, colitis from stress, diet charge or indiscretion (stealing people food, etc), toxin, or others are all on the list. For tonight, just gently clean her up with a baby wipe or tissue. You can apply a little lanolin or olive oil to soothe the rump. A little ice pack (wrapped in a paper towel or thin kitchen towel) pressed to the anus can help with the pain and inflammation as well. Best of luck to you and Luna!

Poor Princess! Cats are lactose intolerant, so that that would be causing her diarrhea. It's best to make sure not give cats any dairy products to avoid GI upset. You can try a home remedy to see if that helps the diarrhea before having to take her to the vet. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. This scratching can be caused by fleas, mites, ringworm, or allergies. If she isn't up to date on her flea treatment, she will need a spot on treatment such as Advantage or Revolution. You will need to disinfect the environment as well. If she is up to date on her flea treatment, I recommend taking her into the vet for an exam. The vet can do blood tests, skin scrapings, and use a Wood's lamp to diagnose allergies, mites, and ringworm. Once the cause of the itching is found, the vet can prescribe the appropriate treatment. I recommend taking her into the vet tomorrow during normal business hours.

Diarrhea is a common problem with cats and is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own). Usually it's not serious, but it's always possible that it could be the start of something serious. If she has any of the following, then she should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. You can help her get through this by feeding bland food (i.e. boneless cooked chicken). Feed small portions (1/4 cup or less) at meal time. You can also add probiotics to the food (can get this at the pet store), which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available. This diarrhea could be due to a stomach illness, eating something rotten, a sudden change in diet, intestinal worms, or a foreign body. I would recommend having her re-examined and do further diagnostics like X-rays and blood work to determine why. If she is still eating and drinking and energetic, you could wait until Tuesday. Your cat's diarrhea could be caused by several things. The most common things that cause diarrhea in a cat are intestinal parasites, irritable bowel disease, or colitis (and inflammation of the colon). I would recommend taking your cat back to the vet again this summer. She may need a dewormer, or antibiotics to help clear up the diarrhea. She may also need to stay on a special diet for the rest of her life to prevent the issue from coming back.
