Why does my cat's diabetes appear and disappear seasonally?

According to the Cornell Veterinary School: "While there is no cure for feline diabetes, this disease can usually be managed fairly well with appropriate education and support of owners. Cats with well-controlled diabetes can live many years of high quality life. Some cats may lose their need for insulin treatments (termed “remission”), but even in these cases it is recommended that owners continue to monitor for the recurrence of clinical signs of diabetes and keep the cat on a low carbohydrate diet." This would be determined by Luna's insulin levels.

Hi! If Cassie were to be diabetic, she would likely be losing weight, despite a good appetite. She would also be drinking more water, and urinating more. The symptoms of a urinary tract infection in cats, are usually: bloody urine, or small frequent urinations, often outside of the litter box. Hope this helps!

Can you post the blood work as your values are not the same as the US? I would confirm it again. I haven't in 13 years seen a diabetic cat present with out weight loss. Unless you caught him very early.

Yes, it is possible with a glucose level that high that Sam has diabetes. However elevated blood glucose can occur secondary to stress in cats so it's impossible to say if Sam is truly diabetic based on only one blood glucose reading. I'd recommend taking Sam to be examined by a veterinarian. A blood glucose curve or a specialized blood glucose test called a fructosamine level can be done to decide if Sam is truly diabetic. Signs of diabetes in cats include increased drinking and eating, weight loss, poor hair coat, and increased urinating. If Sam is exhibiting any of these signs, then I'd recommend getting him checked out right away. Diabetes could be an issue with your cat, especially if she has lost weight recently. Other diseases to consider include hyperthyroidism, renal failure, and cancer, all which could cause the symptoms you are describing. I would recommend taking your cat to the vet to be examined and have blood work performed. Blood work would go a long way in helping to determine what is going on with Gracie. I hope this helps. Chronic steroid usage can predispose cats to developing diabetes. If your cat’s asthma is currently stable then I think it is reasonable to stop medication and see how the blood glucose responds. If you aren’t comfortable with this, or you are concerned she won’t do well if you stop the medications, then I would recommend talking to your vet about having a fructosamine level performed. This will give you an idea of how high her glucose has been over the previous 2 weeks. If it is high as well then you will most likely need to initiate insulin therapy. I hope this helps. Yes, diabetic neuropathy could take months to improve once diabetes is under control. Considering the signs you are describing I think the glucose level may be still unregulated, as usually increased thirst and urination are the first signs to get under control.
