My cat might have diabetes. What can I safely give her to help?

Hello, that is an iron, copper, and B vitamins supplement with corn syrup and sugar which may increase Junior's blood sugar by administering it. I would not recommend using it in a diabetic cat unless your veterinarian approved of it after evaluating his diabetic control. Alternatively, if choosing to give it, you may be able to administer this medication during feeding times when Junior will be receiving insulin to control his blood sugar. Hope this helps.

Dieting in cats can be very difficult, not least because fasting/low energy intake, especially in overweight cats can trigger liver problems. Given her mobility and ability to lie down is affected I strongly recommend you enroll Nina on a healthy pet weight management program - most vet clinics offer these free of charge so her body condition can be monitored and expert nutritional advice on both the best types of foods and also volume to be fed can be calculated. Just reducing volume of her ordinary food will result in increased hunger and may also mean she is not receiving enough of the nutrients she needs. Given her young age a full health assessment to rule out any medical causes would also be recommended.

They may want to see her today to check her for the presence of ketones. Ketones are formed when a diabetic breaks down muscles and fat to feed the body. But ketones cause the animal to feel sick and perpetuates the cycle of not eating and not feeling well. If ketones are present, usually hospitalization is required to get rid of the ketones. Another cause of a diabetic not eating is pancreatitis. Some cats become diabetics from chronic pancreatitis. The treatment for that is supportive care. Even if you can't bring her to your Vet today, I still recommend that you talk to them over the phone. Maybe they can prescribe an appetite stimulant, but a minimum they can guide you on how much insulin to give Sweet pea while she isn't eating well. Giving insulin at normal doses when animals aren't eating well can cause the blood sugar to drop too low, which is serious as well. I wish you and Sweet Pea the best!

If she is alert and more stable on her feet then I would not give any more supplements unless signs indicate that. Be sure to take her a glucose check before administering any more insulin though. I would recommend trying to feed her several small meals every 3-4 hours though to help maintain a higher blood glucose

It is very important for diabetics to eat a consistent diet each day in order to match insulin prescription to energy intake and demand. You should discuss your concerns with your vet as a new diet may require adjustment of her insulin requirement but if they will not eat the diabetic food then an acceptable, tasty alternative (preferably high protein and low carbohydrate) should be found as soon as possible!
