My cat has a dark spot in its eye. Is it serious if it's growing?

Pet's info: Cat | Himalayan | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 15 lbs

Hi, my cat has a black dot in his eye. I brought him to the vet and they told me his eye was fine. He does not seem to be in pain. I did not receive an answer to why he has this. He was not born this way and has had it since hes about 6 months old. Its gotten bigger. Hes 1 year old now . Can you give me knowledge on what this could be?

Certainly. The brown pigment of his eye appears to be an eye freckle. These are quite common in pets and are bengin, so no worries.

Your cat is beautiful and the dark spots may be just a normal pigment variation of the iris. There is however, a condition called uveitis that can cause a sudden or gradual color change to the iris, that may be accompanied by squinting, ocular discharge and low intraocular pressure. Steroid antibiotic eye drops are often used to treat uveitis after a fluorescein stain is performed to confirm that there are no ocular ulcers. To know for sure, a consult with a specialty boarded ophthalmologist at a local ER (your vet can provide a referral if needed) would likely provide you with a definitive answer.

I would have Akimba checked by your vet especially if the spot is new. It could be a melanoma (cancer) or a sequestrum. I'm worried about it because the borders of the spot are irregular and not smooth. It is hard for me to tell based on the photo if the spot is on the cornea or on the iris. Your vet will need to check the eye with an ophthalmoscope to get a better look. I don't think it's a dire emergency but I would try to get him in for an exam soon.

It is difficult to see inside the eye via a photo, but I can kind of see a dark spot near the medial aspect of the left eye. This appears to be a possible condition of the eye called synechia, but I would recommend taking Ploffie to your vet to have a proper eye exam in order to tell for sure. IF this is synechia, then medications can be prescribed to help this condition and a ophthalmologist referral may be recommended.

Hyphema typically pools at the bottom part of the eye. Other possible conditions are iris atrophy or an ocular tumor.

It is not uncommon for cats to develop brown or black spots on the iris. A pigmented area on the iris can be benign or malignant, and differentiating them is sometimes difficult. My guess is that these spots are what we call iris nevus. These are benign (like freckles). Since she has so many, this would be called iris melanosis. Iris melanosis is classified as benign, but in time, it may progress to a malignant melanoma. Although melanomas are rare in cats, the eye is the most common site for it to show up. The first hint that this could be melanoma is rapid growth. If you know the spot(s) is getting larger quickly, that is a warning sign. If the shape of the pupil has become deformed as it dilates and constricts, that is another potential red flag. I suggest you have Dixie examined by your vet to get a diagnosis. She needs a thorough exam with a ophthalmoscope. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Brittany is beautiful! It is common that cats will have color changes in the iris (the colored part of the eye) that will appear darker or almost like a freckle. If your vet has examined Brittany and told you that it is nothing to worry about, then I would just monitor it. It should not change appearance over time or appear to be getting thicker. My 10-year-old cat has a gray raised spot on her eye. Is it serious?

What a beautiful face! It almost looks like this might simply be an "eye booger," so blink her eyes and see if it moves. If it moves, you can use a wet cotton ball and wipe her eye, this should wipe it away. If its not moving when she blinks, and its adhered to the cornea (front surface of the eye), as long as she isn't pawing at it or squinting like she's painful and as long as she's otherwise acting normally, just make an appointment at your convenience. If it seems to bothering her, though, get her in more urgently. If she's pawing at it at all, put an Ecollar on her to prevent her from causing damage to her eye. My cat's eye has dark brown blotches. Is this normal or serious?

Hopefully it is just a normal pigment change, but cats can develop a type of cancer known as melanoma in the eye. You would want this diagnosed as soon as possible. What are these growing freckle-like spots on my 2-year-old cat's eye?

Hello. I am sorry to hear that Ethan has spots on his eye. The eye has many different parts and where the spot is can determine the cause. If the spot is over the top of the eye (on top of the cornea) it could be dry-eye or changes to the cells of the cornea due to chronic irritation. If the spot is three-dimensional (more of a mass) it could be a blocked gland or a tumor (cancerous or not). If the spot is on the iris (inside the eye on the coloured portion), it could be iris atrophy (break down of the iris), iris freckle (normal), or could be melanoma of the eye. Without a picture/examination it is very difficult to narrow down what this could be. Feel free to start a 'Consultation' in order to share pictures and get a better idea, however your plan to have this checked by a veterinarian is a good idea. Due to Ethan's age it is more likely to be an infection or dry-eye, which likely will require medications. I hope Ethan feels better soon!

Why does my cat have a black spot on its eyelid? Is it serious?

Are you talking the about the black part of the lower eyelid? It is hard to tell but it may be a scab from a scratch or rubbing against something. The eye itself does not look bad. Orange cats can have black pigments changes around there eyes, nose and mouth, which are normal. So you can gently try to wipe the area to see if it is a scab or if it is soft and no raised, it may be a pigment change. If it is a scab there is nothing safe you can put on it because it is too close to the eye itself. You will have to see your vet for eye medication.

Why does my cat have light brown spots or rings in one eye? Is it serious?

It looks like Memo could have changes to the iris due to anterior uveitis or inflammation in the eye. This can cause the pupil to become smaller and the iris to change colors. It’s also possible that Memo has a growth on this eye. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian so they can examine Memo’s eye in person. They may want to check his eye pressure.
