What are these growing freckle-like spots on my 2-year-old cat's eye?

It is not uncommon for cats to develop brown or black spots on the iris. A pigmented area on the iris can be benign or malignant, and differentiating them is sometimes difficult. My guess is that these spots are what we call iris nevus. These are benign (like freckles). Since she has so many, this would be called iris melanosis. Iris melanosis is classified as benign, but in time, it may progress to a malignant melanoma. Although melanomas are rare in cats, the eye is the most common site for it to show up. The first hint that this could be melanoma is rapid growth. If you know the spot(s) is getting larger quickly, that is a warning sign. If the shape of the pupil has become deformed as it dilates and constricts, that is another potential red flag. I suggest you have Dixie examined by your vet to get a diagnosis. There are a couple of possibilities here for the changes to Creo's iris. One is iris atrophy, which is a normal aging change. This can often result in pigment change and a "moth-eaten" appearance to the iris or an irregular iris border. Another would be a uveal cyst, which is a darkly pigmented circular lesion that can be attached to the iris. Both of these are generally benign. If you notice any changes in Creo's vision, changes to the eye, or signs of pain (squinting, redness, swelling, etc.), have him re-evaluated by your vet just to be safe.

What a beautiful face! It almost looks like this might simply be an "eye booger," so blink her eyes and see if it moves. If it moves, you can use a wet cotton ball and wipe her eye, this should wipe it away. If its not moving when she blinks, and its adhered to the cornea (front surface of the eye), as long as she isn't pawing at it or squinting like she's painful and as long as she's otherwise acting normally, just make an appointment at your convenience. If it seems to bothering her, though, get her in more urgently. If she's pawing at it at all, put an Ecollar on her to prevent her from causing damage to her eye. A blurry spot can mean that you pet either has a scar on the cornea or it could indicate a corneal ulcer, depending on how this looks. There is also the potential it could be nuclear sclerosis, if it is a deeper opacity that you are seeing. Please submit a photo of the eye in question for clarification on what this likely is, or have your vet do a physical exam to confirm. If it is a corneal ulcer, it needs to be confirmed with an eye test through your veterinarian and then treated with medication. Corneal ulcers however cause excessive blinking and eye discharge. Nuclear sclerosis is common in older cats, and I'm not sure how old your cat is, but they don't require any treatment.. And corneal scars are basically scarring from a previous corneal injury, which typically are permanent and don't require treatment. I wish you the best moving forward with your fur baby. Take care.

It could be iris melanoma but there is no way to know just by looking at a photo. You should have a veterinary ophthalmologist check the eye if you are really worried. At Cali's age I highly doubt it is melanoma but it is possible.

Ouch! Since that is so close to the eye, it should be seen by a vet in person just to make sure it doesn't become infected and spread to the eye itself, and to try and figure out what may have caused the initial injury. Your vet can also provide any pain or antibiotic medications as needed to help the spot heal. Until you can get to the vet, it is best to keep the spot clean and dry, and make sure that the eye isn't bothered. An Elizabethan (cone) collar is also a good idea to prevent scratching at it which can lead to infection or accidental scratching of the eye.
