Why is my cat crying and eating more after neutering surgery?

It sounds like he is still experiencing some pain. Talk to the vet who did the neuter about prescribing an anti-inflammatory/pain medication to help relieve the pain and make him more comfortable. Do not give any human pain medications as they can be toxic to cats.

Hello. An increase in eating is not usually associated with neutering, but weight gain due to less activity is. Kovu is very young to have any of the conditions associated with an increased appetite such as diabetes or hyperthyroidism, but it might be a good idea to have this checked just to be sure. If Kovu continues to eat this way, he could become obese & could develop diabetes, so you do want to get on top of this as early as possible. See your vet to make sure there is no underlying conditions leading to his hunger. Otherwise, he may actually need a higher calorie food. Calories in cat food, both dry & wet, can be very variable in their calorie counts. Kovu might eat less of a more nutritionally dense food, so check your labels. If he just as demanding after a few weeks on a higher calorie food, you may need to actually switch him to a "light diet" where he will get more fillers & less calories. If not, you may want to contact your veterinarian to either get some pain medications or possibly refill some more. You may also want to schedule a recheck with your veterinarian to be sure the surgical site does not look infected. It is also normal for pets to experience abnormal behaviors for a few days after an anesthetic event - this may also be the case for Bunny. You should have him checked, or rechecked, by your veterinarian. Neutering typically does not result in more aggressive behavior. Additionally, any sudden behavioral change can be due to illness or injury. Once medical causes have been ruled out, you can focus on behavioral issues. Consider a pheromone product, such as Feliway Spray or plug in diffusers, to help decrease anxiety or aggression. Provide additional litterboxes, bowls, toys and bedding to prevent resource protection. You may have to separate them for a week or two then gradually reintroduce them while employing the measures described above.

Is he a young cat? If so he may be looking for something to do such as hunting. If he is an older cat then I would be worried about possible hyperthyroidism or diabetes. You may want to consider different toys or tall cat trees that allow him to watch birds out of the window. Hi there. If he isn't neutered, this may be a big part of the problem - unneutered males are highly motivated to go out and search for females, so they are often restless and vocal in the house. They also tend to spray (urine mark) around the house, and their urine is extremely smelly. Because of this, I would recommend getting Kovu neutered to see if this resolves the problem.

Your cat might have something going on with his mouth or teeth, or may have a urinary tract disease or some other metabolic issue. If he is losing weight, you should have blood work and a urine test done to make sure he doesn't have an infection or other issue causing him to stop eating as well as he was. Otherwise, the increase in wanting attention is not necessarily a bad thing or a sign of illness.
