My cat's chronic diarrhea, weight loss, and meds not working?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Bombay | Female | spayed | 8 lbs

My cat has chronic diarrhea, now containing undigested kibble. Vet has been treating her for IBS for a couple of months with steroids & amitryptilene daily, with no change. She is losing weight & not cleaning herself. I’m really worried about her; any suggestions?? Tks so much for your help.

HI there. So sorry Onyx is having this issue.

If those medications are not working I would be worried about the possibility of something else going at. She may not have IBS at all. My suggestion would be to get some intestinal biopsies so you can have a definitive diagnosis. Without a diagnosis all your vet is doing is guessing as to what may be wrong. If you want proper treatment you need a diagnosis first. Here is a link to an article about chronic diarrhea in cats:

In the meantime you can add in a probiotic to the diet. I suggest Fortiflora, it is the best. No human probiotics and no dairy.

Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Yayo!

I treat IBD with a prescription diet, metronidazole or tylosin. If that doesn’t help then I add in a steroid, either budwsonide or prednisone. I don’t think a different probiotic will help. Also be sure he has been dewormed and tested for tritrichomonas.

    I hope this helps!
