Why is my cat's chin bloody, swollen, and missing fur but acts normal?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Steluta!! I agree, the most common reason for the swelling is likely an insect bite or other allergic reaction. If the chin is still swollen tomorrow or her attitude and eating habits change have her seen tomorrow by your Vet. The mainstay of treating allergic reactions are steroids in cats. Poor Dory! You have done the right thing by putting a cone on her so she can't scratch it. This could be an abscess, a cyst, or it could be caused by a dental problem. I would have her seen by a vet first thing in the morning for it. Both an abscess and a cyst would need to be drained sterilely and an abscess will require antibiotics to treat the infection. The vet can determine what is causing this lump and can discuss treatment options with you.

Puncture or bite wounds can get infected rather quickly and result in a fever which may be why he is not eating. They can form abscesses that require local treatment and antibiotics. Hello, Thanks for the good photo. This looks like it may be either a bad chin acne lesion or a small abscess or infection. You can gently clean the area with a warm saline or epsom salt water solution. Otherwise, keep it dry and don't apply any ointments, as these can sometimes trap bacteria and worsen infections. Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It appears Precious may have sustained an abscess, probably from a fight with another cat. The abscess ruptured, & Precious has been licking the area to keep it clean. Her sandpaper tongue can actually cause more trauma to the area. You can clean the area with a little warm water & a disinfectant such as Betadine, & you may need to put an elizabethean collar on her to stop the licking. These type wounds do not always need antibiotics, but it would not be a bad idea to let your vet have a look at it just to make sure . Hope she well very soon.

Given there is no sign of infection, I'd monitor it for now. If it does appear infected (pus, redness, swelling, warmth to the touch), then I'd have him checked out by a vet. I hope this helps!

Hi and thanks for your question this morning. From the picture, it looks like a puncture wound or bite wound that has become infected although it could be other skin issues like a fungal infection, parasitic infection, or a bad bacterial infection. Keep the area clean with a mild cleansing cloth a few times daily or 3% hydrogen peroxide on the wound until you can take Snowie into your veterinarian- snowie may need to have fungal or bacterial culture done on the wound and may need to be on antibiotics or another medication for a while.
