My cat brought home a rodent. What's safe and best to feed it?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rat | Male | 5 lbs

Hi, I recently adopted a rodent my cat brought to me and am having trouble finding what to feed him. I have tried carrots and they gave him diarrhea. I also bought some food from Wal-Mart, but he doesn't seem to be eating it. What can I feed the little critter?

You can feed commercial rodent food. It typically comes in a block or pellet form. Rats are omnivorous and will eat just about anything though. Supplement with fresh vegetables and small amounts of fruits. Ideally, if it is not injured, you should set it free. Rats can carry diseases and pests that could affect both you and your cat.
