My vocal cat can't meow but seems fine. When should I call the vet?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | 9 lbs

3-4 y/o female tabby, very vocal, unable to meow when I woke this morning. No other symptoms noticed. 12 hours later, still active & purring, no discharge from nose/eyes, eating normally, can barely manage a squeak. Just occurred to me that she has always made some breathing noises, especially when sleeping. Google research leads me to believe the sensible course of action is to monitor her for a couple of days before deciding to schedule a veterinarian visit. Any reason to think otherwise?

No reason to think otherwise at this point in time if Sgt. Katherine Pepper (LOVE her name!) is acting normally. If other symptoms do appear like ones you mentioned above or her meow does not come back in 48 hours, then have her seen by a vet. I hope this helps!

I would wait it out at this point in time because he is eating and drinking normally, using the litter, and acting normally otherwise. He might have a respiratory infection, and losing his voice is the only sign. I would keep an eye on him for the next 72 hours. If he still has no voice at that point, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. Should he develop other signs in these 72 hours, such as stopping eating and drinking, then I would take him into the vet sooner. Hopefully, his voice will return on it's own.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I suspect Seuss has a scratch or wound to the throat from eating and vomiting the bones. That will often stop cats from meowing and purring. If his is fine in himself, you should just monitor him for a few days at home. He should be back to normal after the weekend, but if you notice signs of gagging, retching or lack of appetite, you should get him checked by your local vets.

Margo could have something lodged in her throat or this could be a sign of nausea. As long as she is eating and not vomiting I think it’s probably okay to wait until Monday. If she has any other symptoms or seems to be getting worse you should see your vet sooner.

My cat's voice is gone after meowing constantly. What should I do?

Hello, sorry to hear about Thomas. As long as he is otherwise acting like his normal self now that you are back, (eating, drinking, defecating, urinating, and having normal activity) then I would monitor at home to see if his voice returns. However, if you think Thomas is showing additional signs of illness, especially if he is not eating or if he is having a hard time chewing/ingesting his food the I would have him evaluated immediately. Ensure he has adequate food, water and that he is using the bathroom regurlarly. Best of luck and hope this helps.

My new kitten has no meow, sounds dry. Is she sick or normal?

Midnight is absolutely beautiful! It could be that she is suffering from laryngitis, which is an inflammation of the mucous membranes of the larynx. Signs of laryngitis include hoarseness and/or loss of voice. It could also be that she's just a quiet cat who doesn't meow. I'd have her checked out by a vet this week just to be sure everything is ok. I hope this helps, and enjoy your new kitten!

My cat can't meow after being outside in the cold. What happened?

Poor girl. The cold may have affected her vocal cords. This can happen with people also. I would just focus on warming her up gradually by keeping the temperature indoors relatively warm and then continue to monitor her for the next 12 hrs. As long as she is acting normal, eating, drinking and using the litter box normally she should be able to recover. However if she shows other signs of illness and doesn’t regain her voice, then a vet visit is best to have things checked over. I hope your kitty recovers soon. Best wishes and take care.

My cat is losing her voice. Is it serious or can I wait to see a vet?

I think it is ok to wait, and monitor T closely for the next 24-48 hours. Certain viruses can cause a change in a cat's voice and as long as there are no other signs, supportive care is really the only course of treatment in many cases. Make sure she continues eating well, that she does not become more lethargic, and that new signs such as eye or nose discharge do not occur. If you notice any of these signs, I would contact your veterinarian. I hope T is feeling better very soon.
