My cat has brown worms in litter. What are they and how do I treat?

From the picture you provided, it looks like Lucy could have roundworms. I recommend giving her either Panacur or Drontal. Both kill roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms, and Drontal will also kill tapeworms. You can get both from your vet's office. As with last time, you should get her one deworming treatment now and then another two weeks later. At that, in order to keep the worms away, she will need to be dewormed every three months. The worms in the photo appear to be tapeworms or, less commonly, pinworms. these can cause impactions and diarrhea, especially in kittens. Unfortunately, I am unable to prescribe medication for Coco without having examined her. However, your veterinarian can quickly determine the exact type of parasites present with a fecal sample and prescribe the appropriate treatment. Because many parasites are transmitted by fleas, it is important for Coco to be on a monthly flea preventative. You should also be careful when cleaning out her litter box to make sure you wash your hands well with soap and water, as some of these parasites can infect humans. I hope all is well!

If you are seeing worms that look like rice, those are tapeworm segments. Panacur can kill some types of tapeworm, but the best drug for it is praziquantel. That is a prescription only drug, and a great brand that contains praziquantel is Drontal. You can try the Panacur, but you may have to go back to your vet to get Drontal. As long as you practice good hygiene (wash your hands after petting him, wash your hands after cleaning his litter box), you should be fine. I hope this helps!

It's probably tapeworms actually, very common in cats and look like little larvae, those worms arrive with fleas, which are their intermediate host, so you will have to de-flea and de-worm your cat. Make sure the dewormer you use also works against tapeworms (drontal, mylbemax, Profender).

It could be they had worms previously and you didn't know it. It sometimes can take until there is a heavy infestation of worms for you to see them in vomit or feces. Typically only eggs are passed in the feces, and those eggs can be seen with a microscope, not the naked eye. You have to repeat the deworming treatment to kill all the worms. The first one treats the adults already present, while the second in two weeks will kill the ones that had not yet hatched at the time of the first treatment. Hopefully you will stop seeing dead worms in the next couple of days, but it means the treatment is working. Best of luck.

You can get a regular dewormer that has Fenbendazole or Pyrantel Palmoate as the active ingredient to treat roundworms. So you want to treat once today and repeat in 2 weeks, because that is the length of the life cycle. Best of luck and take care of your pet Pickles.

It's definitely a good idea to clean and sanitize everything after your cat has had worms just to prevent spreading it back to your cat (or yourself from contact with any affected material as roundworms are transmissible to people and other pets). I would make sure at the very least to completely change the litter, wipe down the litter box with a sanitizing wipe, and wash any bedding your cat regularly sleeps on including your own, their beds, the couch, etc. This can help get rid of any roundworm eggs that may still be in the environment as it can be spread through fecal matter.
