My cat has bright red blood and mucus in her poop. Is it serious?

I wouldn't really be worried about this at this stage. The purple color may be a bit of digested blood but it could also be due to some colon irritation. I suggest you continue what you are doing and if it persists then you should call your vet to ask them about it. They have more information about her health than we do. My only other suggestion is to put her on a probiotic: like Advita or Fortiflora. This should help with the diarrhea. Since cats are obligate carnivores, they do not need the carbohydrates in dry food. Even grain-free dry food have carbohydrates since they are necessary to make a dry food. This is the best website I have found about cat nutrition. http://catinfo.org Merrick is a great food, so you might try stopping the dry food before you make any other diet changes, but my cats have been doing well on Wellness as another option for you. Small specks of red blood during a bout of diarrhea is not unusual as the delicate lining of the back passage can become damaged from straining. As long as he is bright and alert, eating and drinking it would be ok to leave him but if any lethargy, weakness or vomiting occurs he should be seen urgently by your vet. Be sure he is up to date with deworming medication as intestinal worms are a common cause of diarrhea in young kittens

It is possible that this particular stool was difficult to pass and you helping to remove it may have caused a small amount of bleeding from the rectal tissue. Cats can become constipated, and if she has been passing less stool than usual, straining to defecate and had a decreased appetite I would recommend seeing a veterinarian. There are some other things that can cause blood in the stool as well including intestinal parasites, colitis or even inflammatory bowel disease. If the blood is persistent you should make an appointment to see your veterinarian as well.

Get a fecal sample and send it away for analysis (worms, protozoa, bacteria, etc.) 2. Abdominal ultrasound 3. Trial with hypoallergenic diet 4. Checking B12 levels 4. GI endoscope and samples Often chronic GI issues in cats can be hard to diagnose the exact cause, as it is often a combination of factors, however start at the top of the list and go down, and see if you can get an answer. Certain liver and pancreatic conditions can cause this, as well as intestinal inflammation. Additional tests I recommend are pancreatic and liver function tests, bloodwork to determine nutrient absorption by the intestines, x-rays, and even an ultrasound. The most aggressive diagnostic would be an exploratory surgery with biopsies. You can talk to your vet also about changing your cat’s diet and adding probiotics. Blood in the feces can be caused by many different things including diarrhea (can be caused by eating something silly, worms, toxins), can also be caused by rat bait toxin, clotting factor problems, or an abscess. If there is blood dripping from the bum, then I would recommend having Krookie seen by a vet as soon as possible, as some of these conditions can be fatal if not treated right away. Likely it will be something that can be fixed with some medications, however best to get it checked right away. Best of luck with Krookie.
