Best natural probiotics and diet for cat with bloody, mucousy stool?

I suspect food allergy or IBD. I recommend you try the following: 1. Change the diet to Purina ProPlan Sensitive Skin and Stomach. I have had a lot of luck with clients using this diet and it has really helped. Change the diet slowly over a week's time to prevent further GI upset. You can add a probiotic to the diet to help and this can be purchased at any pet store or vets office. The other recommendation would be to find a different food. Try to pick one with a different meat ingredient than what you are currently on to see if it is a food allergy

Blood in the stool can occur secondary to food sensitivity, but it can also be a sign of parasites or even occur secondary to stress, so I'd recommend seeing your veterinarian first to rule out these medical problems. Unfortunately if you're switching foods frequently it can be difficult to determine which is or isn't helping, so if your vet recommends a food trial you should stick to one specific food for at least 6 to 8 weeks before deciding if it is or isn't helping.

Please don't waste your money on those expensive grain free foods. They are not necessary to use except in extreme cases of an actual diagnosed grain allergy which is rare. Grain free diets are now linked to causing heart disease in dogs (we are not sure yet about cats). I recommend you discontinue use of that type of food. My suggestion would be to use a long term course of a probiotic called Fortiflora. Put one packet on his food every day for at least one month. This will help correct any imbalance in good vs bad intestinal bacteria. DO NOT use human probiotics or things like yogurt. Fortiflora is the best in my opinion and it is palatable so cats like to eat it. Certain liver and pancreatic conditions can cause this, as well as intestinal inflammation. Additional tests I recommend are pancreatic and liver function tests, bloodwork to determine nutrient absorption by the intestines, x-rays, and even an ultrasound. The most aggressive diagnostic would be an exploratory surgery with biopsies. You can talk to your vet also about changing your cat’s diet and adding probiotics. I hate to hear that Daisy is having these problems. The malt paste acts like a lubricant and makes it easier to pass the stool. The blood in the stool can be related to MANY things including parasites, disease of her organs, inflammatory bowel disease, improper diet and cancer. I would recommend to have Daisy examined by her veterinarian to see if the cause can be determined. In the mean time, I would recommend to add canned food into her daily diet (at least one can a day with extra warm water mixed in). If this helps, switch her over to an all canned food diet. Sometimes the stool is too sticky and the water will help. I would also recommend to switch ALL her food to something that is generally easy to digest. The brand I recommend is Royal Canin and they even make a sensitive stomach formula which would be a good initial option. This last decade has brought an incredible amount of new products to the shelves and I know it must be daunting and very confusing to consumers. Unfortunately, most information about these foods comes from the pet store employee or an equally unqualified source on the internet. It's very wise of you to ask an expert. The truth about most of these foods is that their claims usually amount to nothing more than that of a fad diet (i.e. paleo or atkins) and are not supported by sufficient evidence (even though they will make it sound like it is). As scientifically trained practitioners, us vets prefer to offer evidenced based treatment and the same goes for feeding suggestions. Wet food will encourage water intake and may make the stools more soft, but does not cause diarrhea. Lightly cooked, grain-free, natural, etc. are really just marketing gimmicks meant to increase sales. They mean essentially nothing and normally do not have any good evidence to back their claims. The most important thing on that bag is a tiny bit of writing under the guaranteed analysis called the AAFCO statement. This statement tells you what actual research went into making the product. I know the answer may still be somewhat vague, but if you stick to the basic principles of choosing the right food, then you should be successful in feeding a good and nutritious food to your cats.
