Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear Harry is having problems. Breathing problems are always an emergency so I would advise you seek veterinary help right away. Many reasons may exist for breathing problems including lung and heart/chest problems. Cats also get asthma and that can be life threatening. Also, heartworm disease, lung problems including infection, inflammation, different types of fluid in the lungs or chest cavity, heart problems, etc. Again seek vet help immediately so your vet can evaluate Harry and develop a diagnostic and treatment plan. Oxygen, x-rays, blood work may all be indicated, also ultrasound. I hope Harry does well

I am so sorry to hear that Harry is having laboured breathing. There are several potential causes such as primary lung disease or infection, or conditions of the heart which cause fluid build-up in the lungs. I would take Harry in to the vet as soon as you can if he is having trouble breathing.

Why is my 1-year-old cat breathing heavily and panting? Is it serious?

Asthma is the # 1 cause for these symptoms. However, it could also be pain from the lower GI tract, underlying heart disease, pleural effusion, or any other lung disorder. If this continues for more than 3-6 hrs, or if Harley seems to have labored breathing and isn't oxygenating well (blue tongue, open mouth breathing, etc), then its best to take him in to your vet for bloodwork +/- chest x-rays to help diagnose the underlying problem and get him on the proper treatment. This can be a sign of a respiratory infection, but in a senior cat, it can also be a sign of heart disease. If possible, I'd take Heidi into a vet now. Otherwise, rest her, keep her indoors if she's allowed outside, keep her comfortable, and get her into a vet tomorrow. I hope this helps.

No, I recommend to have Harlem examined immediately. This could be an emergency situation. When pets suddenly develop a change in their breathing pattern, they need to be examined immediately. This is especially true for cats who can hide signs of heart disease and not have any murmurs or other clues on physical examine. Other causes include infection, asthma or fluid in the lungs. My senior cat is grunting and breathing hard. Is it an emergency?

With any cat showing potential signs of respiratory distress this is an immediate emergency. I strongly recommend going to the ER clinic now. I cardiac disease in cats often goes undetected until the point that they have difficulty breathing. Hopefully it's not that serious but it is worth erring on the side of caution and getting her checked as soon as possible. These signs may be compatible with a chest infection or alternatively to a cardiac problem. The two differentials must be ruled out asap as this could be a medical emergency. Pleural space or thoracic cavity could have fluid building up. My cat is coughing, withdrawn, and getting worse. Should I see a vet?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I’m sorry to hear Lil Man isn’t feeling well. Coughing is usually a sign of respiratory disease and that is very concerning in a cat. There could be a problem in the lungs like fluid build up or asthma or a problem with the heart like heartworms or something congenital. There are many different possibilities and without seeing him it’s hard to say what the cause is. I recommend taking Lil Man to a vet right away for an exam and possible xrays and blood work. Try not to stress him out while transporting him because this could make him worse. Put him in a carrier and cover it with a blanket. Good luck and kisses to Lil Man!
