My senior cat is breathing heavy and coughing. Is it serious?

If he is breathing heavy then he should be examined by a vet for a work-up. Your vet can take an x-ray to evaluate his heart and lungs to look for abnormalities that would cause him to breathe heavy. He could have an infection, heart disease, asthma, trauma from being outside, etc.

Poor Coco! Yes, I would be concerned about this cough, as in a senior cat it could be caused by cardiac disease or cancer. It's important she is seen by a vet for it, and I would take her in tomorrow if possible for a physical exam, blood tests, urinalysis, and x-rays. These tests will aid the vet in diagnosing her symptoms so that a treatment plan can be developed.

With any cat showing potential signs of respiratory distress this is an immediate emergency. I strongly recommend going to the ER clinic now. I cardiac disease in cats often goes undetected until the point that they have difficulty breathing. Hopefully it's not that serious but it is worth erring on the side of caution and getting her checked as soon as possible. This could be from many things such as....upper respiratory infection, cardiac disease, primary respiratory disease, cancers, or other infectious causes. With his age, he needs a full exam, labs, and chest x-rays. If he is in respiratory distress, you will want to go to the ER.

Poor Spice! These breathing problems could be caused by heart disease, respiratory disease, or cancer among others. This is quite a serious symptom in senior cats, as there are a number of severe diseases that can cause this, and I would have Spice seen today for a physical exam, a geriatric blood panel, urinalysis, and x-rays. Once the cause of her breathing difficulties are found, the vet can discuss treatment options.
