Why is my cat breathing fast but eating and drinking normally?

You are correct that Jeje's respiratory rate is higher than normal, but it's good that he's breathing with his mouth closed. I would be very concerned if he was opening mouth breathing, as that's a sign of respiratory distress in cats. He may not be feeling well at the moment leading to the increased respiratory rate. Because I can't see him in person, I can't say for certain he will be ok, so it's certainly fine to take him into a vet now for a health check. Otherwise, you can monitor him, and if his respiratory rate is still high in the morning, I would have him seen by a vet.

Hi there! It's possible that this could be allergy related, especially if Perry sounds congested when he breathes or if he is having any sneezing or nasal discharge. The breathing changes could also be due to a respiratory infection, bronchitis, feline asthma, or even a more serious problem such as heart disease or a tumor in his chest. Since some of these problems can be quite serious, I would recommend taking Perry to the vet for an exam as soon as you are able to. The vet can listen to his heart and lungs, and may recommend chest x-rays or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem.

Hello. Are you kidding that it is 108F in your home!!! You poor guys, no wonder Nicky is breathing fast & panting. Are you in one of the storm ravaged areas without electricity yet? I really feel for you. Nicky, however, is a older cat, so I can not totally rule out a medical reason for the panting & rapid breathing, but the hot temps are definitely not helping. Can you board him for a few days? I know I would be in a Motel if my home was this hot. If it does not cool down soon, think about moving him. If he still seems to be having some breathing difficulties, please consult a veterinarian at your earliest convenience. Fast breathing can be a normal way for you pet to cool himself. If the house is tolerable for you then it is likely tolerable for your pet. However, labored breathing and open mouth breathing in a cat usually indicate a more serious problem concerning the lungs and a vet visit right away is highly recommended. However, good ways to keep a pet cool is to set up fans in the home (if A/C is not in place), therefore when the pet gets hot he can just sit in front of the fan to cool off. Floor fans can be purchased from your local hardware store or department store. Keeping water available at all times is also helpful. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include thoracic radiographs and bloodwork. He may have an upper respiratory infection, which is quite common in cats. It is hard to say for sure without examining him myself. You can try using a humidifier to break up any mucous. As an alternative you can place him in the bathroom with the shower running for 5-10 minutes 2 x daily. However he ultimately will likely need antibiotics to clear up any bacterial infection that may be present. I would also recommend getting him on antiviral medication (I.e. lysine powder or gel from your local pet store or vet clinic) to treat for a suspected underlying viral infection. Hi there. It's normal for kittens to have periods of fast breathing, especially during REM sleep when they're dreaming - just like humans. So if he's acting normal otherwise, this is likely not anything to be concerned about. It's also quite normal for healthy cats to not drink much water, especially if they're getting any wet food, as the moisture content in the food often meets their needs for water without any need for frequent drinking.
