My cat has a bloody head wound. What is it and can I use Neosporin?

Poor guy. You can try a very small amount of Neosporin on this wound and clean it daily with sterile saline. However, if it doesn't heal well then a trip to your vet for antibiotics is needed. From the picture I can only say this may be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria or fungal). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics or antifungal meds (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. More investigations like sampling and bacterial swabs would be needed to determine the underlying cause more specifically. In my experience I have seen large wounds like this one from Poxvirus infection (but usually other wounds are present as well). I would suggest to handle this wound always with gloves (you are doing it anyway as I can see from the pic). Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking. Poor Salem! You can gently clean the area with warm water and antibacterial soap. Hydrogen peroxide can be quite irritating to the tissue and actually causes healing to take longer in many cases, so I don't recommend using this. Neosporin should not hurt anything if you want to try it, but most cats will groom off any topical medication like this that you use. If needed, you can place an e-collar (plastic cone) on Salem so that he cannot continue to lick at the wound and make it worse. If it does not seem to be improving in the next 2-3 days, it would be best to see a vet as he may need prescription antibiotics to treat the sore.

It could be a bacterial infection, allergic dermatitis, fungal infection, etc. You could clean it with an antiseptic wound cleaner and then put some neosporin on it and see if it helps. If not, he should be examined by a vet for treatment.

Without seeing Forrest in person, I can't say for certain what these spots are, I can only speculate. When cats wake up from anesthesia, they are very disoriented, and can sometimes fall in the cage during recovery. During her recovery, it is possible that Forrest injured herself, causing these bald spots. From your description of them being red, it is possible they are infected and it is a good idea that she is seen by a vet. I would not put any neosporin or vaseline on them. Although quite safe on superficial wounds, cats groom and ingest most of the topical ointment you apply and therefore should be used only under direct veterinary supervision and if there are no other appropriate options. Many human ointments contain multiple other ingredients which are not necessarily safe to be swallowed.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Stormy! I would shave the fur away from the wound then clean it well with water and a mild soap (avoid hydrogen peroxide). Then apply triple antibiotic ointment twice daily. The most important thing is to have Stormy wear and E-collar to prevent licking and keep him indoors. He should see a Vet as soon as possible to at a minimum get antibiotics but to also see if surgery is required to close the wound. I would call your local SPCA to see if they offer a low cost Veterinary clinic. I hope this helps and I wish Stormy a speedy recovery!

Can you post again with a photo? I would be surprised if this was actually a wound. Are you sure it is not a tumor or an eosinophilic plaque? You would be better off continuing the Neopsorin and putting a cone collar on him to prevent him from licking/chewing.
