My cat has a sore spot on his leg. Can I use Neosporin with a bandage?

This lesion could be a result of a skin infection, ringworm, mange, flea allergy, among others. While you can use Neosporin, I do not typically find it to be overly effective for most wounds on pets. Also be sure that M is receiving a high quality flea preventative, such as Advantage, Bravecto, or Revolution regularly. Poor Salem! You can gently clean the area with warm water and antibacterial soap. Hydrogen peroxide can be quite irritating to the tissue and actually causes healing to take longer in many cases, so I don't recommend using this. Neosporin should not hurt anything if you want to try it, but most cats will groom off any topical medication like this that you use. If needed, you can place an e-collar (plastic cone) on Salem so that he cannot continue to lick at the wound and make it worse. If it does not seem to be improving in the next 2-3 days, it would be best to see a vet as he may need prescription antibiotics to treat the sore.

Depending on where it is located, you could try to do a light neck wrap using rolled gauze or a ace bandage. Do NOT stretch the material. Just lightly wrap it. You could also get a cone collar to prevent him from scratching if the sore is far enough up on the neck. I would try to use some oral Benadryl and Benadryl spray to help with e itching. You can also put a small amount of Neosporin on it twice a day to help it heal. If it isn't improving, I would have your vet take a look. Ok. I'm not 100% sure I know what you are asking so I hope I can help you. 1. This looks like a wound as you stated. There is no way for me to tell you how it happened. 2. I do not see any worm(s) coming out but that is actually not unheard of. I don't know if you have cuterebra in your country but we get them in the US. It does not, however, look like a cuterebra infection. 3. I think the Soframycin you were using was fine. I cannot read the name of the spray that was recommended to you so I can't really comment on it. If your vet recommended the spray then you are better off using that. 4. If your cat wants to lick you need to stop him by using a "cone" collar. If he continues to lick it, it will not heal no matter what use on it. From the picture I can only say this may be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria or fungal). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics or antifungal meds (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. More investigations like sampling and bacterial swabs would be needed to determine the underlying cause more specifically. In my experience I have seen large wounds like this one from Poxvirus infection (but usually other wounds are present as well). I would suggest to handle this wound always with gloves (you are doing it anyway as I can see from the pic). Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking. That is a pretty large wound! That being said though, it looks like it is healing fine. It does not appear swollen or to have discharge coming from it. The tissue looks healthy. Having it stitched when it first happened which would have allowed it to heal faster. I am not sure how long it's been but a wound that size would take weeks to heal without stitches. If I were you I would keep applying a topical antibiotic cream and just leave it be. Stop using the Betadine. If he is licking it you must stop that behavior by using an Elizabethan collar (cone). As long as he keeps licking it will not heal. If you want it to heal faster you need to take him to a vet to have it stitched. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

Without seeing Forrest in person, I can't say for certain what these spots are, I can only speculate. When cats wake up from anesthesia, they are very disoriented, and can sometimes fall in the cage during recovery. During her recovery, it is possible that Forrest injured herself, causing these bald spots. From your description of them being red, it is possible they are infected and it is a good idea that she is seen by a vet. I would not put any neosporin or vaseline on them. Although quite safe on superficial wounds, cats groom and ingest most of the topical ointment you apply and therefore should be used only under direct veterinary supervision and if there are no other appropriate options. Many human ointments contain multiple other ingredients which are not necessarily safe to be swallowed.
