Why is my cat having morning diarrhea with blood in his stool?

There are many things that could cause his symptoms. Unfortunately they are non-specific and could be a symptoms of almost anything. Bleeding from the anus frequently signifies a serious disorder. Possible causes of bleeding from the anus can include polyps or tumors of the colon or anus, abscess or infection of the anal gland, constipation, blood clotting disorders, autoimmune disease or even certain types of poisoning. Any chance he ate a toxic plant or was exposed to any toxins? Intestinal parasites are another possibility. Whipworms are intestinal parasites. They are about 1/4-inch long and live in the cecum and colon of the cat, where they cause severe irritation to the lining of those organs. This results in watery, bloody diarrhea. They can also have weight loss and general debilitation. Whipworms are one of the most pathogenic (harmful) worms found in cats. Has a fecal sample been tested? Whipworms can also cause vomiting. Any chance the blood is dripping from his penis and not the anus? In younger cats a common cause of bloody urine is the presence of crystals in urine (crystalluria). When left undiagnosed and untreated, these crystals can lead to blockage of the urethra in some male cats. Has a urinalysis been done? This is the best I can tell you at this time. Poor Milo. This diarrhea could be caused by dietary indiscretion, a stomach illness, eating something rotten, or a foreign body among other causes. The concern here is blood in his stool. You can feed him his canned food, but I strongly recommend you take him into a vet now to get this treated. The vet can diagnose what is causing his bloody diarrhea and can treat him. Poor guy. He sounds ill indeed. Many disease processes can cause loose bloody stool including: intestinal parasites, pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, lymphoma (cancer of the intestines), dietary indiscretion (eating something he shouldn't have), and even a bacterial infection. The first step would be to do a full panel bloodwork analysis, fecal exam and urinalysis done on Oliver. This should be ble to narrow things down quite a bit so that your vet can know what Oliver needs treatment wise. I would suggest scheduling an appt for him soon at your local vet. If Luna has lost his appetite and is showing signs of blood in the stool, I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. This could be due to severe irritation in the colon from diarrhea or there could be something more going on such as a foreign body obstruction. The sooner he is seen the better. I am very sorry to hear that Petunia is experiencing this issue, I am sure it is unsettling. From what you are describing, a soft bowel movement which becomes liquid and has fresh blood in it, it sounds as though Buddy has colitis, or inflammation of the last portion of the large intestines. There are several causes of colitis in cats, ranging from bacterial infections, parasite infestations, IBD, or ingestion of contaminated food. Since you have only noticed one such episode I would continue to monitor Petunia at home for the time being. Provide a bland diet of boiled boneless chicken breast for a few meals, then switch to a sensitive stomach diet preferable by royal canin or hills science diet as these two brands are veterinarian tested and approved. I would also suggest using a broad spectrum de-worming treatment. Blood in the stool is very worrisome to owners and I understand that but if it is a one time occurrence I would not be overly concerned. The most common reason for this colonic irritation is internal parasites. I suggest you speak to your vet about deworming. The two common parasites to cause blood in stool is hookworms and coccidia both of which are treated with different dewormers. You should have your vet run a fecal test first to figure out if that is the underlying reason. I would also suggest you start her on a probiotic and use it for at least 2 weeks. I'm sorry to hear that Casper has had so much diarrhea lately! Yes, it is certainly possible that the stress of his visitor coupled with his ingestion of the other cat's food and treats could have caused some gastroenteritis (inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract), which led to diarrhea. A bit of blood can occur in the stool as a result of irritation to the colon. If Casper is still eating, drinking and acting relatively normally, you can try a home remedy. Start by withholding food for 24 hours, then offer a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken for a few days before gradually mixing his normal food with the boiled chicken over another 5-7 days. If at any point Casper becomes lethargic, starts vomiting, has profuse bloody diarrhea, or stops eating, he will need to take a trip to the vet for further evaluation.
