My spayed cat has a bleeding, infected wound on her hip. What is it?

Thank you for the picture, it's very helpful. The bleeding may be due to you cleaning the area, as it should not be washed while healing as that disturbs the scab and the healing process. Also stitches should not get wet. In the picture, the skin around the area does not look red or swollen. Please feel the area, and make sure it does not feel warm to the touch; if it does, that means it is infected and Charlie has to go back to the vet now. When the vet said keep the area clean, it means keep the area dry and away from dirt and debris, not to wash it. Please do not wash it again, pat the area dry, and since there was only a bit of bleeding, just monitor it for now. If you see redness, swelling, pus, the skin is warm to the touch, she becomes lethargic, and/or she has a loss of appetite, she needs to see a vet immediately. I hope this helps!

That looks like it could be a mass so she needs to be examined by a vet. It may need to be removed and submitted for a biopsy. If it is just infected then she needs an oral antibiotic to treat. Topical cortisone is not going to be enough to treat the problem based on the pictures.

However, maybe it was suspected that she was having a reaction to the suture material or that they were contributing to the infection. It is possible for her wound to heal, but it will be more difficult without the sutures. She must be kept from licking the surgical site and her movements need to limited. You can bathe the area with some salty water, one tablespoon of water per cup of hot water then leave it to cool down. Once lukewarm just gently clean the area using some cotton wool. You can clean it a few times until you don’t take her to see your vet. Also encourage her to eat today, offering some tasty food such as tuna in water. If she does eat her usual food, just stick to her normal diet. Keep her indoors.

It sounds like Cocoa has one or two abscesses....which are deep pockets of infection. Most of the time these are caused by fight wounds in cats, but there can be other causes such as impacted anal sacs. Cocoa is going to need to see your veterinarian to get a prescription antibiotic to resolve the infection. Your vet will also clean the wounds and if this is too painful, she may require some sedation. Please try to get her to your vet as soon as you can.

I see a little redness and maybe some yellow discharge? Always watch incisions for any redness, swelling or discharge. If anything like this is seen, Robin needs to be examined by the veterinarian. That's great news that all that infection is out of her body but she's not completely out of the woods until the incision is fully healed. That's why it's best to play it safe.
