My cat has a bleeding ear cut and bald spots. What should I do?

Pet's info: Cat | Russian Blue | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

My cat, Jug, got out of the house 2 nights ago, came back within 5 minutes, bleeding from his ear. I did not notice until the next day because he slept under my bed for almost a full day. There is a cut behind his right ear and bald patches of fur in random areas of his body. I cleaned the cut with peroxide and warm water compresses. It looks a little better today but it still bleeds when he messes with it

Hello, and thank you for your question. Poor Jughead! I would be worried some of these injuries came from cat scratches or bites, both of which can cause nasty infection. I would start by using a dilute solution of betadine and water (1:10) on the cut area behind his ear, twice a day. This is an antiseptic solution. If the area still looks like it is bleeding with a whitish discharge tomorrow, I would recommend taking him to the vet, as he likely requires systemic antibiotics. In the meantime, I would also put an e-collar (cone) on his head to prevent him from scratching or rubbing the area again. If the cone itself is abrading against the wound, then you could try wrapping the neck loosely with a handkerchief or something similar.

My cat's ear is bleeding and scratching. Is it an ear infection?

It is definitely an injury but whether or not he did it to himself or it was due to another animal I cannot tell. I do not think there are any bugs there. He may be scratching the ear due to an inner ear infection. I suggest you take DJ to your vet for an exam because is there is an ear infection or something down inside the ear canal you cannot fix/treat that at home. This presentation could be due to a trauma (autotraumatism) or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching. This is probably self inflicted and due to generalized itch or inflammation infection of the ear canal. A check up would be immediately required to determine specifically underlying cause and treat appropriately. My cat had a bump near his ear that burst and is now bleeding.

My cat lost part of his ear, no bleeding. What to do until the vet?

As long as it is not actively bleeding and he is not in distress or showing signs of severe infection (weight loss, smell from wound, poor appetite), tomorrow should be ok. I would not wash the wound until you can have it assessed by a vet as ear wounds are notorious for bleeding and being difficult to stop so I would not attempt to dislodge any clot which has formed.
