My cat's nose is black from tears. How do I clean these stains?

I feel your pain on this issue! I have a Persian, and he gets terrible tear stains. I use a tear stain remover on my cat, which I get from the pet store. I would get one of those, as they help remove the stains. You can try feeding him from a porcelain or metal bowl. Plastic bowls can crack and retain bacteria, which can cause continued problems with excessive tearing. You can also give him filtered water instead of tap water, as that's reported to help as well.

Various types of skin infections will cause a change in color of the skin. These include bacterial and fungal skin infections. I'd recommend having your cats seen by a veterinarian for a proper diagnosis.

Due to the Persian being a brachycephalic breed ("smoosh-face"), it is not uncommon for them to develop brown discoloration or crusting in the facial fold above their nose. The most important part of the daily routine for Billu is to clean the facial fold. This can be done by using a warm, moist cloth to remove debris build-up. If the area ever appears red, painful, or has a discharge or odor then it could possibly be infected. When this occurs it is best to have them evaluated by a veterinarian so that a medicated cleansing wipe can be prescribed to help decrease the occurrence in the future.

The crusts are caused by the nose running just a little, then it mixes with skin cells and bacteria or yeast to turn brown. Some cats can have a low-grade chronic upper respiratory infection to cause it. In some of these cats, a supplement called lysine can help (see link below). You can try bathing the area with kitten shampoo, but be very careful not to get the shampoo near the eyes. This could be some staining of the fur which will eventually go away as the fur grows, and if it isn't bothering your kitten and the skin appears normal then I would not worry too much about the discoloration.

This can be a pretty normal thing. Cats have a normal staining in their saliva and tears that can look brownish when dried. Not a big deal. I would not be overly concerned unless it becomes excessive or he seems to have other problems with the eyes. To rule out a herpes infection, you can try giving her a lysine supplement, which will help to strengthen her immune system and reduce the clinical signs of herpes such as runny eyes and sneezing: If this does not help after a few weeks, I would recommend visiting your veterinarian. They can confirm whether or not Seraphina has an eye infection, and discuss antihistamine options to treat environmental allergies, or recommend flushing the tear ducts under sedation.
