Why does my cat have black scabby growth on paws for months?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 years and 3 months old

My cat has had black/brown scabby growth looking stuff on his paws for around 5 months now. Mainly around the edges/ The vet originally said it just looked like damage done to them however it hasn't improved in 5 months. Should we take him for a follow up? Is it likely to be fungus that has hung around for a long period of time? I am still concerned about contracting the fungus and have avoided coming into contact with his paws. Thanks.

Since it never improved, that is a good reason to have Jasper re-examine day the vet. While a fungal infection is certainly possible, other possibilities include bacterial infection, pasrasites, or auto-immune disease. I would continue to not come into contact with the affected skin until there is a diagnosis.

This may be due to an infection such as one caused by a fungus though it could be bacterial and it is just not possible to know just based on a description. Usually these infections are not transmitted to humans unless it is ringworm and it does not sound like that so I would not be too concerned about that. Hello, sorry to hear about Tiger. It does indeed appear that he has some form of pododermatitis. This is most often associated with either a bacterial or fungal infection which is confirmed with a culture. A biopsy can be considered if the paw is not getting better on medications. This would confirm if there is a more aggressive process on going such as cancer. If the area is not improving within a few days, then have Tiger re-evaluated and consider further diagnostics. Jasper could have allergic skin disease, which is very itchy, or a bacterial or fungal infection. Your vet may want to do a skin scraping or fungal culture to figure out what is causing the bump and how to treat it. She may need allergy medication like apoquel or steroids, or antibiotics. My indoor cat has strange growths on his front paws. What are they?

These are skin hyperkeratosis (thickening of the stratum corneum of the epidermis/most superficial skin layer). A check up and possibly a sample of it can be taken to confirm diagnosis. They can be mildly painful and possibly grow even more than now. Surgical excision is usually resolutive but not strictly necessary.
