My cat has black crust on her skin and is uncomfortable. What is it?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | spayed | 5 years and 7 months old | 5 lbs

My cat is a blond and she has black crust on her skin and she will not let me lok at it. She is uncomfortable because she is jumping up on things she never did before. Do you know what this stuff is???

If you were able to post a picture of this skin abnormality it would be very helpful. But based on what you are describing it sounds like either a large scab or eschar that has formed covering up a wound of some sort.

Watch your cat closely to see if she is licking the area excessively. You may need to find someone to help hold her so you could more closely examine the skin. You may also want to try putting some Neosporin on it to see if that helps it heal.

Without knowing what exactly it looks like it is hard to say what exactly it could be. My best guess is that she has some type of infection that is making her skin abnormal and is making her painful and uncomfortable.

If you are unable to look at it yourself I would recommend taking her into a veterinarian where she can be fully examined. If the infection is severe she may need a systemic antibiotics to help clear it up.

My cat has crusts on her skin that bleed. Should I see a vet?

It does need to be seen and treated by a vet but it is not concerning enough to be an emergency. This can be from scratching or a skin infection. Just keep the area clean and let a scab form until you can him checked by a vet this week

My new rescue cat has a bald spot, rough, scabby skin. What's wrong?

Hello. It is very difficult to know exactly what this might be, but it does resemble a healing abscess. If she is constantly licking the spot, then you might want to put a light Elizabethan collar on her to prevent further self-trauma. But, if she is not bothering the area, then just keep an eye on this for the time being. Anything you put on it will just get her licking it off & perhaps doing more damage to the skin. My cat has nose scabs, ear crusts, and hair loss. Should I see a vet?

I would recommend having Sharon examined by your vet and have your vet do some simple skin tests to determine what might be going on with Sharon. My rescue cat has crusts on her fur. Is it a skin condition?

These could be crusts from scratching injuries from fighting with other cats. Keep observing your cats skin. If this does not stop over the next 3-4 weeks (when she is not outside and spends all her time inside) , then this may be a skin condition that will need to be examined by a veterinarian.

My kitten has a hard, dark, peeling scab on her side. What is it?

It sounds like Ramona somehow injured herself, most likely a puncture wound, and it stabbed over to try and heal itself. The purplish, black is most likely dried up blood. As long as it isn't bleeding or bothering Ramona, and has no signs of infection (yellow/green discharge, foul odor), then i would let it heal on its own. An occasional cleanse with BetDine diluted 50:50 with warm water and a topical very thin layer of Neosprin (don't allow licking for at least 20 mins after application if you can help it) can aid in healing. However if it looks infected or like a deep wound that won't heal well (within 4-7 days), then its best to have your vet look at it and get it treated (i.e. Antibiotics, wound management).
