Our new rescue cat has a patch of missing hair and the skin is rough/scabby(?). No other symptoms. Thoughts?

Poor Amina! Pus indicates a bacterial skin infection, which often happens as a result of an underlying skin condition like allergies or fleas. If the affected area is small and she is acting normal otherwise, you could opt to try a topical antibiotic ointment on the area for the next few days to see if the problem resolves. If you do this, you will also need to get an e-collar (plastic cone) for her to wear to prevent her from licking off the ointment and making things worse.
If there is no improvement in the next 2-3 days, or if things seem to be getting worse, then I would recommend taking Amina to the vet for an exam. She may need prescription antibiotics or other medication to treat the problem effectively.
