Why is my cat's belly still swollen after pyometra surgery?

Hello there! There are a couple of things that come to mind with a hardened area at the spay site. The first and most common issue I can think of may be inflammation from a localized suture reaction at the incision site. When Soy was spayed, the vet most likely used a layer of absorbable stitches in her abdominal muscles below the skin. These stitches are meant to absorb over time (anywhere from 90-220 days, depending on the type of suture) and don't usually cause any problem, but sometimes the body's immune system reacts against this foreign material and causes swelling. This is not usually a medical concern unless the swelling is hot, red, or appears to be bothering Soy. If you see any of these symptoms, you should bring her to the vet as this may indicate an infection. It may take many weeks to go away - if you are at all concerned about Soy's well-being, feel free to give the vet that spayed her a call. If Soy will let you, placing a warm compress against the area for 10 minutes a day can also help reduce the swelling. There is also the possibility that this lump is a cyst or tumor, but this is much less likely considering Soy's young age. Good luck, and I hope Soy's lump goes away soon!

Hello. This incision looks normal for a week after surgery. Some swelling like you are seeing is normal especially if they are active and playing. It is normally just some inflammation of the muscle wall and subcutaneous tissue. It can take a few weeks for this to resolve and flatten out, but it will.

There are many different issues that could be causing her abdomen to swell, ranging from fluid build up to organ enlargement or tumours. Unfortunately there is no way to shed any light on what is causing it without taking her to a vet for a thorough examination. They may need to run some tests also.

Poor Beebo! It could be that she is suffering from roundworms again if she's had them in the past, but a pyometra could also be a possibility. Other signs of a pyometra in cats can include vomiting, lethargy, and a discharge from the vulva. If you are really scared she has a pyometra, my advice would be to bring her into a vet right away. A pyometra is fatal without treatment, and time is of the essence for the success of treating them. In my opinion, it's always best to be safe than sorry, and I'd rather have an animal checked out with nothing wrong than not have them checked out and it be something serious. Poor Branquinha! I'm sorry to hear that she's having this problem. It's not normal to have ascites along with loss of appetite and energy as a result of her surgery two weeks ago, so I would be very concerned that something else is wrong. Possible causes of these symptoms would include liver disease, heart failure, severe protein loss due to kidney or GI disease, or some type of cancer. Testing that should help to sort this out would include blood work, abdominal ultrasound, and/or analysis of the abdominal fluid. I would recommend talking with your vet to see what they recommend as the next step for your kitty. If they don't have any suggestions, you could seek a second opinion from another local veterinarian, or request referral to an internal medicine specialist for further work-up.

I see that Princess isn't spayed. I would be concerned that her accidents in the home and her distended belly is due to a pyometra. This is a life threatening infection of the uterus that causes it to become enlarged with pus. I would have Princess seen by a vet immediately. My recommendation would be to have a physical exam, blood tests, a urinalysis, and possibly x-rays to diagnose if she does have a pyometra. If she does, the recommended treatment is spaying her. Please take her into a vet now.
