Why is my dog's belly and privates reddish-brown and won't go away?

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Actually dog saliva has a pigment in it that can cause the hair to turn a brownish red color. My guess is that the reason their fur is changing color is from them licking not from the urine. I recommend seeing your Vet to figure out why they are scratching and licking first. It could be from fleas, allergies from environment or food), or an infection. Then after you see the Vet go get them groomed! I hope this helps!

It does not seem irritated so there is no need at this time to seek veterinary care. The auburn color to her fur is most likely salivary staining. So even if you don't see her licking she most likely is at night or when you are not home. This may be allergy related. I would call your veterinarian and discuss allergies. There are many different options from anti-histamines to daily medications (Apoquel) to monthly injections (Cytopoint). The brown is cause by the urine. Urine staining isn't uncommon and unfortunately there is not much that can be done about it

Usually this color change is a result of licking. If Bella has been licking the area she may have allergies causing her to lick and stain her fur a brown color. You can try using a gentle shampoo like Douxo calm to bathe Bella once or twice a week to see if this helps. I'd also recommend Bella be on a quality flea preventative like Bravecto or Vectra to prevent itching due to fleas. If Bella continues to have the color change it would be a good idea to have her examined by a veterinarian to ensure she does not have any skin infection or inflammation.
