What behavior changes can I expect in my cat after his brother dies?

I'm so sorry your kitten died recently! Cats do mourn when they lose a companion, and it could be that Harry is mourning the loss of the kitten. I would give him lots of extra love and attention during this time. Cats do not mourn as long as humans do, and his behavior should be back to normal soon. Now, if Harry continues to act differently for more than a couple more days, then this change in behavior could be due to a medical problem, and I would have him seen by a vet. Maybe one day, when you are ready, you could consider getting another companion for Harry.

I am so very sorry you have to say goodbye to KJ. Some cats do grieve when their companions pass on. Make sure he keeps eating, give him lots of love and attention, playing with him frequently. Our pets experience grief and loss, and just like people, it takes them a variable amount of time to deal with that loss. If Brostom was very close with the other cat, he might benefit from having another cat in the home to keep him company. If you decide to pursue this, I recommend a slow introduction and keeping the new cat in a separate room for a few days where they can smell each other under the door. If this increases Brostom's agitation, then it might not work, but I think it would be worth trying. I hope this helps.

There are some things you can do at home which may help the remaining cats to feel more comfortable. Stick to a routine, pets generally do best if they know what to expect. Considering using a Feliway diffuser which dispenses feel good pheromones. Set aside 30 minutes a day for vigorous play with the cats. Provide climbing and hiding opportunities in the house. I'm very sorry that you had to say goodbye to your cat! There will be a period of adjustment for them, and it can take a few weeks for that to happen, but they are already showing signs of adjust if his sister is not as shy as before. I am sorry to hear about your cat passing away. It is very normal for pets in the same household to grieve the loss of a sibling/house mate. What Tommy is going through is completely normal. I would first recommend taking her to be checked out by your vet just to ensure there is no underlying illness that is causing her change in behavior. If she receives a clean bill of health then you can assume her behavior is due to the loss of her sister. It is hard to say whether or not getting another cat would help. She may love the company of another female or she may feel stressed at having a new housemate. In the meantime, while you are deciding on whether or not to add another cat to your home, try spending some extra time and giving extra attention to Tommy, this may be all she needs. He is likely missing his buddy. If he saw his dead friend when he was dead, he would normally truck on and not be upset for long. Give it time, give him lots of loving, eventually his grief will stop. Play with both of them at the same time, it may help.
