My cat attacked a dog protecting her kittens. Is this normal?

Your cat was probably being very protective of you because he felt that you were being threatened. This can be a normal response for a pet that is very attached to a specific person. If he exhibits this behavior again you should remove Kitty from the situation to protect you and to teach him that his behavior is not acceptable. If Kitty starts showing more aggressive tendencies more frequentlt you may want to consult your vet for specific training advice and/or medication to help him calm down.

Some cats are somewhat rough and vocal with their kittens. As long as the kittens appear to be nursing regularly, are snuggled up together or close with mom, and are not in any sort of weak condition, I would not remove them from their mother's care. Cats are very sensitive to other cats in their territory. Unlike most dogs that will accept another dog into their house relatively easily, for cats it can be a different story. Your cat is upset by the presence of the strange cat in your house. Animals behave that way sometimes for reasons that are unclear, taking their anger out on you. She may smell the foster cat on you. I would definitely keep them separated from each other and give her some time and space to possibly accept the fosters presence. Don't get hurt! I wouldn't force your attention on her for now. Maybe in a few days she'll be easier to approach.

Hello, cats indeed are territorial and dont like unfamiliar smells. This means that your cat when he smells other cats on you, he does not recognize you sufficiently and will react with aggression mainly out of feer. It would be ideal that if you will be petting other stray cats that you wash your hands thoroughly and even change your clothes before interacting with Bascoot as this can not only make your cat afraid but also be a source of stress.
