My cat ate a toy bell. What symptoms to watch for? Will it pass?

Unfortunately, we cannot say if the bell will pass or not. I wouldn’t make him vomit as it can actually hurt his esophagus coming back up. I would recommend monitoring the cat and if you notice any vomiting or diarrhea or if he becomes lethargic at all I would recommend bringing him into your regular veterinarian for x-rays. You can always bring them into the veterinarian to have them do an x-ray to see if the bell is actually in his stomach since they should show up on the x-ray. If Atlas seems OK, I would keep an eye on him while you continue to search for the item. Signs to look out for of a possible obstruction include vomiting, diarrhea, attempting to vomit without being able to, loss of appetite, lethargy or pain in the abdomen. A cat that isn't feeling well may also try to hide or become less social. If you do see these signs, or suspect that the item was ingested, it is best to bring Atlas into your vet for care.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You need to monitor your Tinker Bell over the next 24-48hrs. Do not give her any laxative and do not change her diet. The symptoms of gastrointestinal foreign body include vomiting, lack of appetite, abdominal pain, lack of stools. If you see any of these symptoms in the next 48hrs, please take Tinker Bell to your vets as an emergency. If after 48hrs she is well and will have not developed any of these symptoms, it will mean that she is out of danger.

You can continue to watch her for any evidence of an obstruction which may be observed with symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, inappetence and/or lethargy. Hello. Pancakes should be able to pass this as it is pretty small & pliable. If it has been more than a few hours since she ate the balloon, it is possible it has already passed out of the stomach into the intestines. I have seen cases where kitties have vomited up strange things a week later. Just watch her over the next 5-7 days for a loss of appetite, lethargy, diarrhea, & protrusion of the third eyelids. These are the tissues in the inner corner of each eye & when you can see them covering at least half the eyes, it is a clear indication that Pancakes does not feel well. Just monitor her for the moment; unfortunately strings and any type of linear foreign body can sit in the intestine and stomach for ages before coming out!. As long as she eating fine and drinking ok and passing feces and urine normally and being normal in terms of demeanor and activity level she will be ok and she won't need any check up. You could potentially give her some mineral oil (2mls every meal )like paraffin oil to lubricate the gastrointestinal canal and help to get rid of the strings if there. Poor girl. Unfortunately the only thing you can do now is to monitor her for any signs of a foreign body obstruction, which includes excessive vomiting, lethargy, lack of appetite, or small stool size. If you see these symptoms then a vet visit is recommended to have testing done and determine if she will need surgery to remove the cloth that she ingested. I hope that she will be ok.
