Cat ate string, now lethargic & not eating. Is it an emergency?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 3 years and 7 months old

My 3 year old male cat ate some string 2 days ago. He vomited shortly after what seemed to be the amount he ingested. He has vomited twice since then but only what looks like water and some food. His first bowel movement contained a long piece of string and the second one had none. He has voided his bowels twice since the incident and his bladder 3 times. Today he won't eat, other than treats. He seems more lethargic than usual but no pain or discomfort when his belly is touched. Is he ok?

Oh naughty Loki for eating string! If he is more lethargic than usual and isn't eating, I would take him into the vet right away. It is possible there is still more string instead his intestines, and he should be examined by a vet now. If there is still string in his GI tract, then he will need surgery to remove it.

    If your cat has possibly eaten string and is vomiting then I would urge you to contact your veterinarian or local emergency clinic immediately. A linear foreign body such as string is serious and even life threatening. Besides causing intestinal inflammation and obstruction they can also cause multiple perforations of the bowel will require surgical intervention. Your veterinarian will be able to examine your cat and perform X-rays to determine if the string is the reason behind the vomiting or if there is another cause.

    Winston is very sick, and this won't be in relation to his eye. He has to see a vet immediately. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

I would be concerned that Izzy could still have part of the string in her intestines or as the string was passing through her intestines it could have caused holes to form and now she has peritonitis. Izzy needs to get checked out by a veterinarian to make sure that she doesn't have peritonitis. If so she may require surgery to get better.

This history concerns me - I start to get concerned any time a cat skips more than 1 meal, and if Luna is also lethargic and with the history of eating foreign objects, my concern for a foreign body / GI obstruction is very high. I recommend having Luna seen by your vet as soon as possible. Even if they don't think it's necessary to take her to surgery, helping her stay hydrated can do wonders for helping foreign material pass successfully through the GI tract! Please make sure he is passing urine. As you know male cats can get a urinary blockage that can quickly become life threatening. If he’s not urinating that is a medical emergency so take him in right away to have him checked. Vomiting and lethargy can be a sign also. They can get kidney damage from this too. What you are describing does fit with an intestinal obstruction. The only other thing that we also commonly see is vomiting. The most concerning thing is that you report that he is acting extremely lethargic. Cats are very good at hiding their pain, so when they get this depressed, it indicates a severe problem. If you also think that he may have eaten a small toy, then I would recommend taking him to the vet as soon as possible. It would be less concerning if he was still active and eating, but a bowel obstruction can cause severe pain and quickly lead to life-threatening complications. It would be best to seek veterinary care in person ASAP as linear foreign bodies can cause a lot of GI issues if left untreated. Your vet can help monitor Silence, and let you know if he requires surgery or if it looks like things are passing.
