My cat ate steel wool and is throwing up pink. Do I need a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 10 years and 1 month old | 18 lbs

I have 2 cats. My mom let them out of the room early while I was still sleeping. When I got up, I noticed a torn up ball of steel wool in the living room, and they like to play with that. Then I walked to my roon and founf a small pile of clear throw up, and when I cleaned it, it was slightly pink in color. Im really concerned, but I fed them and they're eating fine. I don't know who could have gotten in to it, so I'm really worried

The pink vomit is concerning. It’s possible they ingested some of the steel wool and it’s caused damage or significant irritation the the upper GI tract.
I recommend to play it safe and have both cats examined by the veterinarian today. The veterinarian may take some radiographs as the steel should show up. They can also provide medication to protect any damaged areas if needed. Keep in mind other things can cause blood in the vomit as well.
I hope the cats start feeling better quickly and please feel free to post any additional questions.
