My cat ate Babybel cheese wax. Why is he hiding and not eating?

Hello there. It sounds like your cat might be licking the remnants of cheese off the wax wrappers. The cheese might cause his stomach to become upset, which can lead to vomiting or diarrhea. Also, if he swallows the wax, it can lead to a blockage in his intestines. I recommend putting lids on your trash cans to prevent him from getting in them.

It is a small amount of wax, and given her size, I would not say there is a huge chance of blockage. I would monitor her to be safe over the 72 hours. If you see any signs of vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, or lethargy, then I would take her into the vet for an exam. She should pass this fine, however.

I would be a bit concerned as well. Hiding with cats usually means there is something wrong (unless this is a brand new environment for him). I would give him a bit more time but if he continues to hide and not eat, etc for longer than 24 hours then you should get him to your vet for an exam.

There's a good chance that Benjamin was scared by the noise and people that he isn't used to having around. I would place his litter box, food and water very near to where he is hiding and keep the area quiet so he will come back out. A special type of canned food or treat may help coax him out. You may want to get a Feliway diffuser to help reduce his anxiety. If he doesn't come back out within 24 hours I'd be a little more concerned that he may be sick as cats will often hide if they don't feel well. Also, if he doesn't come out to eat or drink soon I'd start to get worried about dehydration. The problem with these streamers is that they can cause a linear foreign body, which leads to symptoms such as lethargy, anorexia, diarrhea, and vomiting. It could have been painful to have that streamer removed from his behind, which may be why Theo is hiding. I would monitor him for now, and if he hasn't passed any more streamers by tomorrow, I would have him seen by a vet for a physical exam and x-rays. If the streamers are causing a linear foreign body in his intestines, he will need surgery to remove them.

Ouch, poor Leo! Even though his skin is not overly red and inflamed, it seems likely that he may have burned himself on the candle melt yesterday. Burns are extremely painful, which could explain his sudden behavioral changes. Since there are no safe over the counter pain medications for cats, I recommend taking Leo to his vet. The vet will be able to perform an exam and prescribe any necessary medications. I hope he feels better soon!

If Major had not been urinating or had been in and out of the litter box a lot then it’s possible he could have a urinating blockage which is an emergency. If he is urinating normally but not eating I would still recommend a vet visit tomorrow. Hiding is something cats do when sick. There are any number of things that could have an older cat not feeling well including dental disease, renal disease or other organ dysfunction. I hope Major is better soon.
