My cat ate my antidepressant. She's drowsy. Is this an emergency?

Pet's info: Cat | British Shorthair | Female | spayed | 7 months and 17 days old | 6 lbs

My 8 month old tortoiseshell female cat is normally very lively but last 36 hrs seems v drowsey at times, eating and drinking OK. Worried I may have accidently dropped 1 of my antidepressants called mirtazipam 30mgs, will she be OK?

Mirtazapine does have a side effect of drowsiness or sedation in pets. It is commonly used in cats as an appetite stimulant. 30mg would be 4 times higher than I normally use, and this overdosage can cause: 57% vocalizing, 38% agitated, 23% vomiting, 21% tachycardic, 15% ataxic and 11% lethargic. The symptoms can last a little longer than 72 hours. As long as Dolly is still eating and drinking normally, I would continue to watch her. If the she is still not completely normal in a day or two, she may need a checkup with a vet.

Hello, sorry to hear about Dolly. 30mgs of that medication is about 16.6 times the recommended dose for cats. Side effects with overdosage include sedation, vocalization, increased affection, low blood pressure, and an increase heart rate. It is recommended that in case of an overdose, pets be administered charcoal to reduce any absorption of the drug. It is generally well tolerated by patients at recommended doses and used in cats for appetite stimulation.

You should have Dolly evaluated by your veterinarian about this incident so that they can decide wether administering charcoal is appropriate for Dolly. If you believe the ingestion could have occurred recently, then Dolly may be induced to vomit to see if the medication can be retrieved.

If he was being dosed daily it likely was a small dose and will only be effective for approximately 24-36 hours. I would talk to your vet about continuing it. If they haven’t figured it why he isn't eating, then they may recommend additional diagnostics like blood work or X-rays. If you already know then you can continue mirtazipine longer until he is feeling better. And yes, he may have developed a preference for the tuna juice. You can continue to add tha to his other food. 0.125mg/lb (0.25mg/kg approx) is the recommended upper dose so some severe and possibly life threatening sedation could potentially occur. I would recommend getting them to an emergency vet for supportive treatment and monitoring until they can clear the drug out of their system; iv fluids, maintaining body temperature and possibly the administration of an antidote may be required

My dog accidentally took a double Mirtazapine dose. Is she okay?

This is about a 5-fold overdose for your cat. Please take her to your vet right away. He will have to make your cat regurgitate the capsule. At overdose with 20 mg/kg Clomicalm (5 times the maximum therapeutic dose), bradycardia and arrhythmias (atrioventricular node block and ventricular escape beats) were observed approximately 12 hours after dosing in dogs. Cats are usually more sensitive to medications, so this may be more toxic. Please take your kitty to your vet now.

My pet ate Lexapro. Is this antidepressant toxic to dogs or cats?

Hello. At that dose & with a single acute ingestion, I would not expect to see anything in the dog or older cat. But if the kitten ingested the 20 mg, then you may see symptoms of serotonin syndrome. This could include vomiting & diarrhea, & neurological signs such as ataxia or incoordination while walking, agitation, tremors, mild seizures, vocalization, disorientation, or even sedation & lethargy. You could take the smallest cat to your veterinarian for possible decontamination, or just keep a close watch on everyone for any concerning signs I have mentioned. Mirtazipine is typically well tolerated in dogs. You may see sedation or drowsiness. Symptoms that should be addressed by your vet include low blood pressure or increased heart rate. Given his age, you may want to have him checked out at the nearest veterinary ER or put a call in to the Pet Poison Helpline ( (855) 764-7661 ). There is a fee for this call, but they will have toxicologists and doctors who can tell you definitively if Cody is at any risk.

My 6-month-old kitten ate Cymbalta. Is it harmful to my cat? What now?

Animals can show signs of toxicity after ingesting 1.5 mg per kilogram of body weight and Hunter may have ingested over 7 mg per kg. I would be concerned about the potential for serotonin syndrome secondary to this medication. It could cause agitation, high heart rate or blood pressure, muscle tremors or seizures. I would recommend seeing an emergency veterinarian to discuss treatment. Attempting to induce vomiting might be recommended if he ate the pill recently, but it can be difficult to get cats to vomit. Otherwise the recommended treatment would probably be IV fluids and monitoring in the hospital.
