My vet recommended acepromazine for my cat. Is it safe?

Hello. It is unlikely that this dose will be fatal, but this is an indication that she cannot tolerate this medication. Sedatives can be very unpredictable in dogs, so much care & thought must be given before administering them. If you can get her to the vet, that would be best. To avoid being bitten, ask to borrow a muzzle from your vet, or go ahead & purchase one. If you cannot do this, then you will just have to let the ace wear off, which can take 24 hours. Just make sure she is not lying in the damp or in bad weather. If you need to get her to the vet, next time you might talk about using something like Trazodone to calm her anxieties, or just a tiny dose of the ace. Not to worry! 35mg of acepromazine is still within a normal dosage range for a dog Botticelli's size. She may be extra groggy and have a longer nap than usual, but there should be no other detrimental effects. :-)

I personally would use Prazosin instead to control urethral spasms. Discuss this with your vet to see if this is a better option for him. Acepromaxine has negative effects such as sedation and sometimes urogenital issues, so it isn’t my first choice for this condition, but every doctor is a bit different based on their experience. Prazosin has minimal sedative effects do you should be happier with it. Best wishes and take care!

The published dose for oral acepromazine is 0.5 to 2 mg per kilogram for sedation, however if this was notnprescribed for Tom I would not recommend giving it. Acepromazine can be dangerous for cats with certain medical conditions.

Actually now the recommend medication is gabapentin. Ask your veterinarian for some and give it before the visit. With this the cats are just mellow, easy to handle and not as drugged as with the other medications. Diazepam is not used much in cats now due to it causing liver problems. Apromazine can make them sedate but doesn’t reduce the aggression. I personally don’t find Xanax effective. Hello. Yes, the medication in Sileo is used in cats all the time, but actually using this particular product in cats is considered extra-label & therefore you are using this at your own risk. Since the smallest amount that can be dispensed from the tube is one dot, I assume that is the maximum that anyone would want to use on a cat, but PLEASE contact your pharmacy or your veterinarian for the exact amount to be used.
