How to ensure a 5-week-old foster kitten is warm and fed overnight?

Hi John! I would be afraid ti could die overnight as newborn kittens are extremely fragile and cannot last long without feeding. You can try to get him to feed. Rub a nipple near his mouth or at the side of his face. This should stimulate him to open his mouth, which will allow you to gently put the nipple inside. Once he feels the nipple on his tongue, that should stimulate his natural sucking reaction. If this doesn't work, then yes you will have to bottle feed him. He will need a kitten formula and a bottle, which you can get from a grocery store. If the grocery isn't open all night, there is an emergency formula recipe you can give him to hopefully get him through the night. What an adorable little kitten! His eyes are open, so he's at least 3 weeks of age, but without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain his age. I would go out to a grocery store now to get him some KMR, which is a kitten formula. This will be safe to feed him via a bottle, and I will put a link below on how to bottle feed an orphan kitten. Hello. Thank you so much for fostering Blue Bell. At this age, she does not need kitten formula, but may like a wet food along with her kitten kibble. Most will just leave the kibble out for the kitten to nibble on & you can offer her a teaspoon or so of wet food 2-3 times a day. You need to introduce the kitten to your older cat slowly by keeping them in separate rooms & every few days switching them around so they can become accustomed to each others scent. A calming collar is an excellent idea as is using a Feliway room diffuser in both rooms so they are bathed in the calming pheromones. At this age, Blue Bell can effectively regulate her temperature, so no heat lamps or heating pads are necessary. With time, hopefully everyone will adjust. You need to keep it warm, use blankets, fan or a hot-water bottle. Try to put her with the mum and see if he will feed from her. You should put his face right on the nipple and try to 'attach' him. If he is not able to feed from the mum you will have to syringe-feed or bottle-feed the kitten with a cat milk formula. After feeding you need to massage the belly with a warm cloth to stimulate urination and defecation.

If she has open eyes, most of her kitten teeth, can walk, and is otherwise doing well, you can actually start leaving some kitten food out for her. Canned kitten food mixed with formula/milk is a good place to start. You can leave this for her before bed and she can eat it throughout the night. Sam is very young still and it might be that he is feeling pretty lonely being left alone! Keeping him near where he can see you, or letting him snuggle with a warm water bottle wrapped in a towel or a ticking clock in a towel may help. These help mimic a warm littermate and can be comforting to anxious kittens.

It sounds like you are doing all the right things. She should be bottle fed every 3 hours or so. Keep her nice and warm, environmental temperature should be around 80 if she isn’t snuggling with mom or with the other kittens. I would try to encourage her to nurse first, and then offer the bottle. Weigh her on a gram scale daily to make sure she is gaining weight daily. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon.
