What dewormer should I use for my 10-month-old British Shorthair cat?

Hello. If your cat goes outdoors at all, or has problems with fleas, it is not wrong to be proactive in preventing intestinal parasites. We basically do this when we administer monthly heartworm preventative to cats ( & dogs ). So yes, it is OK to worm your cat, at least a couple of times a year with a broad spectrum wormer. Puppies and kittens need a series of repeated deworming medications. And even if they have been dewormed, it is common for them to have other intestinal parasites since there are so many different types of parasites and they each require a specific type of deworming. What you are describing is likely tapeworms, so hopefully the tapeworm medication will work. Tapeworms are killed by a medication called praziquantel, which is prescription only. A dewormer containing that can only be gotten at the vet. A great deworming medication is Drontal which kills tapeworms, roundworms, whipworms, and hookworms. OTC dewormers will only kill roundworms, whipworms, and hookworms. Personally I always recommend a deworming medication from the vet, as they are stronger and better than anything you get OTC. Drontal is safe and healthy for kittens. Bambi should get a dewormer now, and another in two weeks. After that she will need to be dewormed monthly until she is six months of age, and then every three months thereafter. It's perfectly safe to give them a deworming medication even if they don't have worms, it prevents them from occurring. I never recommend getting OTC flea and tick medications. Many brands of them, such as Hartz, are terrible products that do not work and can have serious side effects in cats. I personally recommend getting a flea and tick medication from the vet such as Frontline, Advantage, or Revolution. When you make an appointment with the vet to get her vaccines, you can also get the deworming treatment as well as the flea and tick medication. I hope this helps!

Cats do not require heartworm test prior to these medications. Drontal is a good idea to use with these as it covers tapeworms and those products do not. I like advantage multi as I feel it protects against fleas better

Hello. Since you wormed her for the tapeworms, it is a good idea to also worm for roundworms & hookworms. You should be able to easily find this at PetSmart, just look for anything that indicates it has pyrantel pamoate in it & just follow the label directions. Since you didn't post a photo of what product you have then it is hard for me to say much. It does sound like tapeworms based on your description and if you got a tapeworm specific dewormer then it is the correct product. Bayer is a good, reputable company. All the dosing information should be on the bottle as should the side effects to look for. Dosing is based on weight so be sure you have as accurate a weight as you can get. Usually there are no side effects. You need to basically shove the pill down his throat and then follow that with a little bit of water to be sure he has actually swallowed the pill(s). You should repeat the dosing in 3-4 weeks. If you don't know how to give your cat a pill I suggest you watch some YouTube videos on how to do this. There is an "art" to it. If you would like to post again with a couple photos of the bottle we can maybe give you more specific information. We would also need the cat's weight. Be advised that cats get tapeworms by ingesting fleas that contain the tapeworms larva so you also need to treat him for fleas.
