Is Brewer's Yeast for dogs with garlic flavoring safe for cats?

Cats can eat brewer's yeast which is what the product pictured contains. It is an excellent source of B vitamins and some say it has a certain degree of flea repelling activity. One half teaspoon at mealtimes can be offered.

Hello. Great question! You cannot use the human brewer's yeast if it contains garlic in any form as garlic is toxic to dogs. As long as brewer's yeast is the only ingredient in the human product it should be fine to give your dog. Best wishes.

Breewer's yeast contains Vitamin B which has a repellent action for mosquitoes and maybe also fleas. However this is not realiable and it is far better to use a commercial flea preventive. Here is how you get rid of fleas: Unfortunately fleas only hop on the body of your pet when they want to feed, then they hop off again and stay in your pet's environment. So you need to treat all pets in the household as well as the environment (which contains the fleas, their eggs and larvae). Flea treatment:  1) Get some flea medication such as a Flea spray or a spot on from a pet shop or your veterinarian and apply monthly 2) get flea powder, put some in your vacuum cleaner bag and vacuum your house and furniture and also non-carpeted areas frequently to remove flea larvae and eggs which live off house dust., Dispose of the bag in the trash outside. Hot-wash all the pet's bedding, If you do this diligently for a few months you will get rid of the fleas. Flea products: Spot-ons and/or chews Advantage, Advantix Advantage Multi (Advocate in the UK) Frontline (ticks as well) Bravecto spot on (ticks as well) - for cats, in tablet form for dogs Simparica, Nexgard Revolution (stronghold in the UK) Tablets: comfortis (will only kill fleas once) Collar: Seresto (ticks as well)

You would need a relatively high amount of yeast to cause your cat a serious toxic effect, it is in fact the alcohol from the yeast that is problematic and can cause toxicity, if she just licked a little bit of yeast she is not likely to show any symptoms.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Xanthan gum is an emulsifier / thickening agent and is considered safe in dogs and cats. It is not a known GI irritant and the other ingredients should be ok as well. The only thing I would be hesitant to give Kitty is the garlic powder. I would not give these treats to Kitty because of the garlic. Garlic can cause serious problems as it is part of the allium (onion) family. I would find a product that does not contain onion / garlic and use that instead. I hope this helps! I am not aware of any toxic effect of the grapefruit seed extract but, in my opinion, large doses can be detrimental, so you should be careful how much you give. Also, please, remember that grapefruit seed extract interferes with several medications, therefore if you give your cat grapefruits, please inform your vet about it.

I'm sorry to hear that your cat has some elevated liver enzymes. Those medications are not ones that we commonly use in the US, but your vet would not have prescibed them if they were not safe to use. Large amounts of garlic or onion can cause a problem in red blood cells in cats, but garlic oil is generally only a 0.05% solution, so it should not be a concern.
