Is it normal to feel anxious about adopting a new pet after loss?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 11 years old | 19 lbs

I’m terrified to adopt another pet after my beloved “ duck” , he was a cat, died in August. The whole ordeal was scary, painful, and expensive. I love animals but get anxiety at the idea of getting another companion. Is this normal?

This is not uncommon and is nothing to be ashamed of. There are pet bereavement specialists that you may find helpful or you could consider volunteering with a rescue charity to see if you can help without the entire responsibility of your own pet until you are ready
