Is my cat grieving a lost pet? What are the signs and how to help?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 12 years and 9 months old

Seems a weird question but can i tell if my cat is greiving? I think he is. My moms dog and my cats best bud died (old age) they dont live together but would play when ever my moms dog would stop out. It felt right thing to do so i told my cat that the dog had passed. He seemed suprised and walked around with his tail down and even rejected a treat. He had a fellow cat die before (severe infection) and he acted similar (he hasnt been calling out with meows this time.

I do think our pets grieve, and this can last various lengths of time. All you can do is provide lots of love and affection and with time the grief will improve. New toys and treats can help. You can also try a [pheromone product]() that can help cats during periods of adjustment. It is available in a room diffuser or a spray.
