Adopting a cat with meningitis? Is it curable? What should I know?

Surgery is the preferred method for treating meningiomas, and is usually successful if the tumor is removed completely. Meningiomas in cats are firm, well-circumscribed masses that do not usually invade the neural parenchyma, and are easily delineated from normal brain tissue. The overall prognosis depends on the extent of the tumor, but a study found that surgical removal yielded survival rates of 71% at six months. The MRI is the next step, so I would have that done. Are you 100% of the diagnosis? Was it made with a skin scrapings? It is not impossible, however it would be highly unusual, to get this diagnosis in a 6 month old kitten. Before you adopt her I suggest you get that information. If only a presumptive diagnosis has been made, then you should take her to a veterinary dermatologist to get a confirmative diagnosis. This is not a disease you want to treat them for if they don't actually have it. Diagnostic tests that should be performed include cytology, surface skin scrapings, and deep skin scrapings. If no problem is identified with these screening tests, and there is a clinical suspicion for pemphigus, then biopsies should be collected and cultures should be submitted to a laboratory for analysis. Cultures are recommended to rule out a topical disease process from bacterial or fugal infections. I cannot give you an overall cost associated with this disease as it would depend on which medication is used (all have different price points) and her response to the therapy. She would need at minimum yearly blood testing (cbc, chemistry, thyroid) for sure which can run ~$150-$200. The prognosis is very good. I do not see anything abnormal based on these photos. If you are worried about something you should take her to a vet for an exam. Chances are she needs to see a vet soon anyway to get some vaccinations. I'm a bit unclear as to whether or not you were asking about a scratch that the cat gave you. If that is what you are worried about you will need see your own doctor for that question. Hello, chronic rhinitis and stomatitis tend to be from inflammatory autoimmune disease. However, some infectious organisms may cause this as well. In general, you kitten as an older cat may have adequate immunity against the viruses which she was vaccinated for. One way to prove this would be to check her titers. Make sure that the cat you are adopting is FeLV/FIV negative as these can still be transmitted to Mittens and significantly affect her quality of life. Once you have confirmed the adequate immune status of both cats either through titer testing or vaccination, then you may then introduce them slowly for the best success. It really depends. Stress and underlying illness (in both cats) can cause a weakening of the immune system which may lead to secondary illnesses taking hold. That said, it would be a good idea to make sure the new cat's health issues are managed and not currently flaring to decrease the chances of spread. Taking a slow approach to introductions (giving each cat their own space, using pheromone diffusers, separate litter and food access) can also help to reduce stress and reduce the chances of spreading illness. I would make sure both cats are healthy enough for the potential stressor by talking to the vet that is treating them. From there, formulating a slow introduction plan, sanitizing any shared spaces, and monitoring for any signs of illness (sneezing, fever, loss of appetite, etc) can help catch early illness and reduce the potential of any problems.

Poor kitty. It is very likely the seizure was due to a buildup of toxins when she was obstructed with the toy. If she hasn’t had a seizure for over 2 years now since, then I would say she is likely going to be ok health wide in that regard. This is not likely to be related to the bite and is more likely a couple of different problems that are commonly seen after adoption. Cats often get upper respiratory infections in the shelter and when they get adopted. In most cases this is similar to a cold in people, but they have potential to get more involved. Diarrhea is also quite common when cats shift to another environment and/or food. In both cases, some sort of infection is present, but stress is often the initial cause. Most reputable shelters offer a time period (two weeks or so) where the adopted animal can be brought back for vet care. I recommend calling them at your first opportunity to ask about this and hopefully schedule an appointment with a vet. We can usually get these infections cleared-up with treatment.
