Is my 14-pound cat overweight, or am I underfeeding her?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | spayed | 14 lbs

My roommate has a 2.5 year old cat. She weighs approx 14 pounds and my friend feeds her only 1/2 a cup of food a day because she “doesn’t want the cat to get fat.” However, I read the feeding instructions on the bag and am afraid that we are grossly under feeding her as the bag of food indicates that we are feeding her the amount for an 8 pound cat. Do you think she needs to be fed more? Also, the cat doesn’t seem big to me but 14 pounds seems pretty heavy for a cat. Maybe she is too big?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lucy. The side of bag offer basic feeding recommendations that try to account for the cats with the highest metabolism in that age bracket. Each food differs in calories per cup so it is difficult to make an accurate recommendation for her without this information. As far as assessing her weight, she needs only a thin covering over her ribs. You should be able to feel them through her skin. She should have a defined waist from the top and side views. I hope this information helps!
