My finch fell in water and is shivering. What urgent care is needed?

Weakness can have multiple causes, with infections being only one possibility. Provide heat support in the 80-85 F range can give some support. Finches eat primarily seed but also need a vitamin/mineral/protein support in the form of a wide variety of vegetables. Provide a soft bedding/towels on the bottom of the cage to protect if falls. Thanks for reaching out. Antibiotics in the water are never a proper treatment, as you have no control over dosage. Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can give aid. You need to find a veterinarian with avian experience, try the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV.org) as they have a find-a-vet area. They probably did not die from getting cold, but probably didn't help. They need to be seen ASAP and given systemic antibiotics and dosed appropriately. If not eating, need to be syringe fed as young birds have no energy reserves. See a veterinarian ASAP. Good luck.

Remove the cage to a cooler area of the home. Lightly mist her with water or provide a bowl she can bathe in. Make sure she is drinking to keep hydrated and eating normally. If she doesn't perk up in a few hours, you will need to find a veterinarian or an experienced avian veterinarian to examine her.

These birds are naturally adapted to warm/hot environments, so a bath in a cool environment can quickly cause hypothermia. It's best to provide a heat lamp for after the bath to prevent hypothermia. I hope that helps and all is well with Joe.

Take the perches out of the cage and provide a towel on the bottom of the cage for comfort. Place food and water bowls on the bottom within easy reach of your bird.
