My parakeet is sick and I can't afford the vet. What can I do?

However there are some things that may help make her more comfortable to hopefully make it until your vet appointment. Keeping her in a small hospital cage that is kept warm can help with body temperature regulation. Perches should be low to the ground or removed completely, and soft bedding placed at the bottom of the cage in case she falls. Having food and water (if she is still eating on her own) in shallow dishes she can get in and out of even if weak is best. If she's not eating or drinking, you may need to make a slurry of baby bird food and water and drop feed it to her to help keep her energy up. Otherwise, monitoring her and any changes in her symptoms can help when your vet is able to see her.

Squirt is probably very ill, but i couldn't tell you what is wrong based on these very general symptoms, you will need to take her to an avian vet specialist where a blood test and faecal exam will be done to determine what is the cause of the disease before it can be treated. you can't do anything at home to help her.

The only thing you can do at home is carefully remove the brown stuff on the cere and put a bit of oily lotion on it. Everything else, ie the exam to look for an underlying cause can only be done by a veterinarian. An avian vet is not more expensive than a dog or cat vet.

If you think she is losing weight and malnourished then you should re-evaluate her diet. Birds do not do well on an all seed diet so, if seeds are the majority of her diet you need to change that. There are no medications that can be prescribed over the internet. But providing heat support in the 80-85 degrees range, 24/7 might allow him to conserve some energy that he would normally use to heat himself. Remove perches and allow to stand on a flat soft surface (towel or blanket). Ensure that food and water are within easy reach. Using a small syringe without a needle, to offer water is very important. Go slow as to not allow aspiration into the lungs. Most pet stores sell baby bird hand rearing formulas, in an attempt to give calories. Still, a veterinary visit is best. Good luck.
