How to tame a new parakeet and when is it safe to let him out?

In order for your bird to trust you you will need to work with him daily. If you are worried that he may fly away when you let him out of the cage you can clip his wings so he will not be able to fly. This is a completely painless procedure and the feathers will grow back if you decide at a later date to allow him to fly. This way you can let him out of the cage to explore but won’t have to worry about him getting away. The more interaction you have with the bird the better. Offer him treats while you are working with him so he can start building some trust in you. Patience is best when getting your budgie used to handling. If he has a favorite treat you can offer it every time you approach the cage or every time he sits up on your finger. Once he is comfortable there, you can begin to then offer treats after you pet him, to teach him that this is a rewarding behavior. It can take some time, and if your budgie is too stressed simply take a break and let him calm down a bit before trying again.

Time and patience! It can take several months for a bird to start trusting enough to want to hop on you or interact more. It sounds like you're on the right track already with offering food from your hand. I would continue to do this, and gradually increase to petting Sky, and then handling her more/asking her to perch. If she becomes too nervous, letting her calm down and trying again later is best.

Hi. It can take weeks to months to make a parrot comfortable in a new environment. Many factors come into play including age and past history. Primarily just be very patient and offer lots of treats by hand. Figure out what foods or treats she REALLY wants and offer them only by hand, don't put them in a bowl. Make sure she feels safe, don't grab her and let her learn to come to you and that it will always be a good experience when she does. Hello and congratulations on your new friend, King! Parakeets make wonderful pets, and they are a great first bird for a new bird owner. It sounds like you have everything in order, but I'd definitely get King some toys sooner rather than later as parakeets do require mental stimulation - they are very intelligent! Taming will take some time and patience. Using a perch to entice him to step up can be a good place to start, though I recommend waiting a few days to allow him to adjust to his new surroundings first.
