How do I get my picky parakeets to eat more than just bird seed?

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female

I have two adopted parakeets. I have tried introducing dried fruit, fresh fruit and even millet seeds. They only are interested in regular bird seed. What can i do? It's been months. Thank you

If at first you don't succeed, try try again! Patience and retrying are your best bets. Birds can be picky eaters, and sometimes it takes several introductions of the same thing over and over before they decide to try (and like) it! You may want to try introducing those treats again at different intervals or times of day to see if they eventually start to check it out. In some cases, a bird may never be interested in it, especially if they weren't exposed to it when they were younger, and as long as they have a balanced diet otherwise, that is OK- toys or attention can work great for enrichment as well!

If they don't like one fruit or veggie, try again at a later time, or try again with a different item. Making it interesting by hanging it up, adding it to a toy, etc can also spark curiosity and exploration and make them more interested in trying it out.

All you can do is offer her veggies, if she eats them or not is completely up to her, you can't force her eating something she doesn't' want to eat. birds on seed diet will often prefer seeds only, which is another good reason to switch to bird pellets.

My budgie won't eat fresh fruits and vegetables. What can I do?

The best thing you can do is to keep offering them. If they won't take it from your hand, start by just placing the treats in a cup in your budgie's cage so that they can try it out on their own terms. If they enjoy the food, you can offer it to them every time you come by, but without giving it by hand. Once they are comfortable eating with you just observing and staying near, you can then work up to offering it by hand and then interacting with them more closely. If they become stressed out, or don't want to try the item, give them some time to relax and settle down before trying again.

My picky budgie only eats millet. How to balance their diet?

Gradually introduce a pelleted diet such as Exact or Pretty Bird. You can soak it in warm water to make a mush or paste. When you have them out, pretend to show an interest in the new food as this may also pique their curiosity. Decrease the amount of millet offered and have other foods available at all times.

How do I introduce vegetables to my picky bird who only eats seeds?

Thanks for reaching out about Zucchini. Try measuring the amount of seed you offer in the morning and the remainder by the next day. Let say you determine Zucchini eats 1/2 cup of seed per day. Give 50% (1/4 cup) in the morning and a second bowl of cut vegetables. If he eats all the seed in the morning, he doesn't get any more until the evening. He will not starve. If he gets hungry, hopefully he will eat from the other bowl. You can also try offering cooked pastas, beans and many other human table foods. Good luck.
