What foods are safe and unsafe for my parrot, and are peanuts okay?

I have a yellow crown amazon parrot, and I want to provide him with a variety of foods, such as vegetables and berries, but I don’t know what is good and bad for them. Help please! My parrot LOVES peanuts, like when i feed him his nut mix, he always goes for the peanuts first.

Peanuts are great treats, but they are fatty and can lead to obesity. Try to limit them, if possible. Boomer can eat pretty much anything that you eat with a few exceptions. Do not feed chocolate, avocado, caffeine or anything with alcohol. She can eat grapes, blueberries, strawberries, pitted cherries, banana, pineapple and apple (no seeds). Limit fruit to no more than 10% of the diet. Too much may cause loose droppings. Acceptable vegetable include corn, peas, green beans, other cooked beans, potatoes (cooked), broccoli, zucchini, kale and sweet potato. She can have cooked grains and cooked plain pastas. Scrambled egg makes a great weekend treat. This list is by no means all inclusive. Other lists can be found online using the search engine of your choosing.

You don't mention what type of bird you have, I am going to assume a parrot? In birds it is best to avoid chocolate, caffeine, avocado, onion and garlic, comfrey, apple seeds, pits/stones from fruits, sugar free foods containing xylitol (this can cause issue in dogs and we don't know for sure about birds), foods high in fat or salt, mushrooms, dairy, grit, peanuts that have become moldy, and the plant portion of members of the nightshade family (i.e. tomato, potato, peppers, eggplant- the fruits aren't toxic but the leaves/plant parts are). What should I feed my new bird? Seeds, pellets, fruits, and veggies?

Hello again! These items look great for King, but the bag is correct - generally, parakeets and parrots should be fed a pellet-based diet to avoid fatty liver disease. Seed diets are high in fat (even without the sunflower seeds), so should be given as a treat supplementally only. Millet should also be given in moderation. Your bird can definitely have fruits, but include some veggies, too! Grapes, apple, banana, broccoli, kale, green beans, and peppers can be great for birds. Avoid avocado, apple cores/seeds, cherries (with seeds - seedless are ok) onion, and garlic. Dried fruits are ok too, just avoid the ones that have added sugar. I hope this helps! I am happy to read he is behaving normally. Continue to monitor his behavior for symptoms of illness. Lovebirds can eat a variety of seeds, fruit and vegetables. These include banana, apple, pear, grapes, squash, cooked pasta, potato and corn. Limit fruit as it can lead to loose stool. A commercial pelleted diet should be fed and supplemented with a fortified seed mix. Stay away from mushrooms, chocolate, avocado, fresh/raw tomato and diets based solely on seeds.

Can cockatiels eat peanuts? Are fried peanuts safe for my bird?

Unfortunately, fried peanuts are not an appropriate diet item for cockatiels (or any bird species). Peanuts in general are not a good choice, in any form, including raw and unsalted. They have very little nutritional value, are high in fat, and can potentially have fungus that grows easily on them in the non-human grade types that are often sold for bird consumption. More appropriate nut choices for birds include almonds, walnuts, and Brazil nuts. For a cockatiel, 1/4 of an almond or walnut per day is an appropriately sized treat, and an equivalent size of a portion of Brazil nut (since they are quite large).

Is my parrot's diet healthy if he eats human food but no veggies?

The best thing to offer your parrot is a diet that consists mainly of pellets (80%) and then fruits and veggies (15-20%). Less than 5% of his diet should be from “people food” because it will not give him the proper vitamins and minerals he needs. The good news is that Rangu is still very young and you should be able to adjust his dietary habits fairly easily. Try to refrain from feeding him any people food for the time being except for very small amount when training/working with him. I hope this helps.
