What treats and fruits can my lovebird eat and what to avoid?

Hello again! These items look great for King, but the bag is correct - generally, parakeets and parrots should be fed a pellet-based diet to avoid fatty liver disease. Seed diets are high in fat (even without the sunflower seeds), so should be given as a treat supplementally only. Millet should also be given in moderation. Your bird can definitely have fruits, but include some veggies, too! Grapes, apple, banana, broccoli, kale, green beans, and peppers can be great for birds. Avoid avocado, apple cores/seeds, cherries (with seeds - seedless are ok) onion, and garlic. Dried fruits are ok too, just avoid the ones that have added sugar. I hope this helps! Fruit are less important as mainly sugar, and should make up at most 10% of diet. Beans and legumes as a protein source is also important. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about your lovebirds. Seed is not a complete diet lacking vitamins and minerals and many proteins. Fruit is little better. Birds need to eat a wide variety of vegetables. Seed might have to be rationed. Wait for birds to fledge prior to drastic changes. If the birds observe you eating they might be more likely to try it. Good luck.

The daily diet should consist of some seed but also fresh vegetables (all), a protein source such as cooked beans/tofu, therefore treats can be fruit (dried, fresh). Good luck.

Peanuts are great treats, but they are fatty and can lead to obesity. Try to limit them, if possible. Boomer can eat pretty much anything that you eat with a few exceptions. Do not feed chocolate, avocado, caffeine or anything with alcohol. She can eat grapes, blueberries, strawberries, pitted cherries, banana, pineapple and apple (no seeds). Limit fruit to no more than 10% of the diet. Too much may cause loose droppings. Acceptable vegetable include corn, peas, green beans, other cooked beans, potatoes (cooked), broccoli, zucchini, kale and sweet potato. She can have cooked grains and cooked plain pastas. Scrambled egg makes a great weekend treat. This list is by no means all inclusive. Other lists can be found online using the search engine of your choosing.

It could be that Tweety just isn't used to apple yet. I would keep offering it to see if she starts to like it. Other veggies such as salad greens, strawberries, broccoli, etc may be fun for her to try out. Remove any uneaten food daily to avoid spoiling.
